I'm on the Bad Color Train

I've tried this one a couple of times -- don't know which side of the "Or" I'm on. In the first submission, I agree I probably oversaturated the sky -- particularly when I looked using another monitor. On second submission, I stuck with original scan (K64 original) and just sharpened it a little. So is this a lack of color depth or too much saturation?

Your whites are not white - I see magenta on my system.

Depending on your editing software, you can shift away from magenta, or reduce the red channel.

Here's a rough idea on where to head with the photo, edited on a very plain program (irfanview) that I have here at work.

It's a bit in your face and the train is cut off in the frame.

Thanks for the input Joe. I agree it's an "In your face" photo -- But I've always liked those.
I corrected the white (Thanks Lloyd!) and re-submitted (haven't heard back yet). Hopefully they will like it.

Well, the third submission failed for the same reason. I don't think I'm too saturated, so it must be color depth. I really appreciate everyone's advice and would appreciate your input on this submission. I would really like to win the color battle then address the cropping issue when I cross that bridge.

On my calibrated monitor the snow is still red, the whites on the loco still are not white. In Photoshop you might try selective color to reduce the overall magenta cast. Maybe you could rescan the slide and pay attention to the settings on the scanner. I like to use auto-while balance with my Vue-scan software.

Once you fix the color - maybe just a touch saturation or curves tool.

Thanks DS -- this time I went back to the photo and did the white correction on the snow instead of the locomotive (probably should have done that first). I noticed an improvement on the snow and on the locomotive's greens and whites. It's been a year since I tried to post something like this and it seems they've become much more stringent in this area. I've posted some that wouldn't make the cut now!

I was going to suggest that if you did a fix like Loyd's to add a little more saturation to make the green on the loco and the red on the barn pop. Looks like you did that anyway.
