Default Do these have any chance?

Hey guys,

Here are 3 shots I took today during cold, snowy weather. I am trying to convey a feeling of just how cold and dreary it was. What do you think?

Can't say I'm a fan of either offering for RP either..

While we are at it, might one of you guys explain that notorious "bad cropping" issue with this photo that was rejected? I understand that they don't like "common power, cloudy day" shots, but I don't see where the bad cropping comes into play.

My guess is too "in the face" for RP, which is enhanced by how close the engine is to the right and bottom.

ADD: That makes the shot a bit tipsy, which so much visual weight on the right side.

Slow shutter speed, most likely. I get that same blown out look quite often when shooting under low-light conditions and refusing to bump up my ISO.

Here is another photo, also slammed with that notorious "bad cropping" issue. Can any of you guys explain how I might recrop this photo to improve it? http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...&key=834204683. The original is show below, uncropped. Also, please give me your sentiments on this one, which was rejected for "low esthetic qualities." I am trying my "hand" at developing an eye for esthetics. http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...key=1022532631

crop: keep more of the left, get rid of more of the right. The current crop is unbalanced; most of the action is on the left side. Oh, and the watermark looks AWFUL!!!! Find a version that is MUCH less intrusive. Please!!!!!!

aesthetics: remember, there is aesthetics, and there is RP aesthetics. So it's always a touch call. For my particular aesthetic taste, hmm... I don't care for how the windows and drainpipe are cut off. And the junk coming into the near window is distracting (not that you can do anything about that, oh well).

But my strongest reaction is that the MoPac sign doesn't look original at all but rather like a decoration that was put up recently. So it doesn't convey a strong sense of history. I'm not saying what it actually is, I'm just saying my reaction to it. It's just a bit too plain and uninteresting to warrant a detail shot.

Just one opinion...

Thanks a lot, JRMDC!! I took some more off of the right, and put back in a bit more on the left, so that the end result is as seen below. As to esthetics, I am going to keep practicing and see what I can come up with that conveys history, etc. Like they say: Practice makes perfect!!
