Default Knoxville Locomotive Works

I went to the G&O web site today and found a new addition. The page is still under construction, but KLWX has a repowered motive unit. Mike, what did this one used to be?

According to TRAINS magazine, it was a former Norfolk Southern (the original one) GP38.

Interesting radiators, huge. Ugly short hood, nasty sharp angles.

I must disagree, this is one of the best looking genset units, atleast it somewhat keeps its original looks.

I like the genset look, if by that you mean the low long hood that is longer than a traditional switcher.

And, Nikos, you have to speak up, defend that awful short hood! Ugh!

The short hood looks pretty much like a regular EMD geep?
The nose is a bit pointier, whats so terrible about it? The radiators on the long hood arent that attractive but not that bad.

Well, maybe I have calmed down a bit. That nose is still butt-ugly, all sharp and angular and pointy. And I will await more than one shot before drawing final judgment. But still, "one of the best looking genset units"? I can only presume that you find gensets disgusting.

Crap - I like all those noses... because... wait for it... they are different.

Grew up with the standard cab EMD... so, a change is good. Nowadays, the Dash 8, Dash 9, ACCW, GEVO nose, which hasn't changed since I was in my late 20s, is the dullest of dull.

Truth is, if they were still making C-Liners, PAs, and Sharknoses, I'd probably complain about them (no, not from an aesthetic standpoint - I'm not an idiot, but from a familiarity standpoint - familiarity breeds contempt and everyone's always talking about the new kid in town).

(Oh wait - I didn't even realize that one of those shots was mine.)

I'm not a big fan of the nose, but I'm a fan of the "it's not like every other thing out there today" aspect of it. I'd love to see it on the L&C.

KLWX 2250 is ex Wiregrass Central 2881/ex SOU 2881/nee original NS 2002. The locomotive is not a genset, but rather a low-emissions diesel. It only features one powerplant, not a series of 2 or 3 as a genset has.

This unit represents Knoxville Locomotive Works' first original product. Very interesting work, indeed. They also should be putting out some extensively rebuilt GP38-3s in the near future.
