Default SD40-3s coming to the Aberdeen Carolina & Western

Two ex CN/WC SD40-3s have been spotted in Chicago lettered for the ACWR in North Carolina. I have been able to find that there will be a total of four at present, and possibly two more to come. These are the ex Alstom leasing units in gray paint with orange trim that had a white CN "noodle" added to the long hood and WC sublettering.

It is definitely a buyer's market for older power right now, and good to see some lines taking advantage. Those SD40-3s should dig in really nice pulling grain up the hill from Aberdeen.

This line has gone through what seems like alomost costant change since its inception in the late 80s. Even when I caught up with it starting in 1999 to now, it looks like a completely different railroad. I wonder if these units will be an addition to it's current flee or if ome of the GP40s might be shipped off.

At present, no plans to get rid of any of the GP40-2Ls. I sure hope these things get the updated ACWR paint scheme. Those will be arguably some of the best looking SD40s out there.

I imagine they will get repainted and pretty soon. The F units notwithstanding, they paint their stuff pretty quickly now.

Funny how quickly that changed, isn't it? This was not all that long ago a shortline that had only a couple of units on the roster in any sort of paint scheme. Now it's one of the best looking fleets in the region...

Reported to be in Hamlet as of two hours ago. And you're right about how things have changed there. When I first found them in 1999, hey still had one GP38 in fading Chessie paint and other GP16s in various stages of whatca best be termed unpaint.

4 more ex CN SD40-3s in the Alstom gray paint scheme were noted at Woodcrest, IL from the latest auction sale lettered for ACWR. 6909, 6919, 6925, plus one more. Report is from Ken Lanovich in Chicago.

I've got to make another trip to Aberdeen soon. Did you see the report on Carolina Rails that up until the ethanol plant shut down on the A&R that some of the ex-CN GP40-2s were allegedly going to jump the track from the ACWR to the Aberdeen & Rockfish? Any truth to that you think?

The deal to sell some ACWR GP40-2Ls to the A&R was under consideration, but never made it past that phase. I'm sure the shut down of Clean Burn Fuels sealed the fate of that one. A Canadian cab GP40 would have looked sharp in A&R colors, that's for sure.

You mean to tell me that the Clean Burn Fuels plant, after having just opened, is now shut down? Does anybody have any details on this?

Yes sir, Clean Burn Fuels temporarily shut down in March, and then filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this month. The linked story below gives more detail. They hold out hope for restarting when the price of corn drops.

They have evidently taken delivery of a few more SD40-3s (same ancestry as their others) Which begs a few questions --

1.) Should we expect to start seeing the GP40-2s getting sold off or leased?

2.) What about the slug/mother set?

3.) Is there a current roster that at least includes all of the GP40-2s? Are all in new ACWR paint? Are any still in old CN paint?

4.) To sort out the confusion, how many SD40-3s are there now?

Let's see here:

1) I wouldn't expect that right away, but as more SD40-3s come online, it is certainly a possibility. They have been doing trackwork on the west end and want to use them on that side of the system, as well as the east end (where they already are).

2) They are very pleased with the 703/704 (slug) pair. With fuel prices staying high, I suspect those will be staying around for some time. It's also possible if some GP40-2Ls become surplus, they may convert more to slugs.

3) 9529, 9538, 9556, 9582, 9593, and the 703/704. There are none in CN paint. 704 is the ex 9423. All but 9556 were in the new paint, and it was wearing the previous ACWR scheme at last check, but could have been repainted by now for all I know.

4) Assuming they've all arrived, a total of nine. First batch was 6907, 6910, 6918, and 6926. The recently delivered batch are 6909, 6919, 6922, 6925, and 6939.

Default Plant shut down and motive power?

So how does that ethanol plant shutting down play into the mix of ACW's current power situation? Did they agree to buy these units BEFORE the plant shut down or after? And without that traffic are SDs really needed? Are they trying to get away from using CSX power to the feed mill out of Aberdeen?

If the ethanol plant remains closed will these prove to have been a bad purchase for ACW?

Anyone got a photo of the slug?

I hadn't heard that the ethanol plant on the ACWR shut down. Are you getting it mixed up with the one on the Aberdeen & Rockfish? I still hear about a lot of CSX power on the grain trains, too. As for the 704, I was trying to find an RP shot for you, but the scroll bar issue is back with a vengenance and won't let me look it up. So here's a Rob Dickson shot of the 704 from another website.

No problem, Joe. CM-- the Clean Burn Fuels plant is on the A&R. Not at all related to the ACWR, whose business is better than ever. A lot of the ACWR's growth seems to be at the expense of the WSSB, especially with the ethanol traffic.

The Clean Burn bit made it into the thread because there was talk of ACWR selling the A&R a couple of GP40-2Ls at one point. As for the A&R, they definitely took a bit of a hit, mainly through investment in track upgrades between Fayetteville and Dundarrach, plus the lease of two SW1500s from GATX. Hopefully that wasn't a long term lease they signed, and they can ship those away. They definitely don't need them at this point.

Many thanks guys. Two ethanol plants on two similarly named railroads. From 8 hours away that is an understandable mistake.

I certainly am long overdue for a trip back home. Just as soon as ACW gets a couple more -2 painted I am there.

No worries, we all make mistakes. 3 of 9 SD40-3s are now painted. At the rate they are going, the ACWR should make a good fall destination...

As surmised below, just got word from a friend who recently passed through Star, NC that three of the GP40-2Ls (9529, 9593, and 9624) are drained and in storage there. That report also blows my belief that slug 704 is the ex 9624, unless there was a mistake in the report. Need to do a little double checking on that.
