Default All its cracked up to be?

Through switching cameras (I now own a 40D), I ended up with a different camera bag than I was using. Its preferred method of storage is SIDEWAYS. Is this really that big a deal? I have been keeping it flat despite so far, but is it important or a running joke?

P.S.: If this is a joke, a lot of y'all will probably laugh your heads off at this post. I just missed the original thread.

It's the cardinal rule of photography. You must never, ever store your camera sideways. I believe it was Ween who did this and not only did he get fussed at by Mike B., but he eventually had to replace the camera when all the pixels went over to the left side of the frame. The camera worked fine on wedgies where the train was going from right to left, but that was it.

Joe is absolutely correct. I definitely learned my lesson with sideways storage; now I apply the same "always-up" rule with everything that has an LCD...cell phone, iPod, etc. I also avoid taking Interstate on/off-ramps that have too much bank because I don't want the lop-sided pixel syndrome again...

Hmm same here, I store mine sideways and I just started to notice the pixels are leaving the right side of the screen for the left side. Guess I will have to start storing it the opposite way and hope I can get the pixels close to their original places. I'll let you know how it works.

Also, if you open the memory card cover or the terminal cover while the camera's sideways, the pixels will spill out, and those little suckers are a bitch to pick up.

Here is the original thread. The fun starts at post #53:

This forum was much more fun with Mike B... (And now to get myself flamed)... and really enjoyed his posts. Didn't always agree with him, and thought he was a bit gruff at times, but he kept things lively and he often gave terrific advice.

I agree. We all hated when he s**t on our stuff, but secretly loved it when he tore open those that just didn't get the whole photography thing. Sell your camera... one of his little gems, IIRC

Gruff? He was a dick, but there are three types of people... see 'Team America, World Police' on you tube for the balance of that

I would often get pissed off reading his responses to me... then, I would go back and look at them about an hour later, and realize... "wow, that's actually some really good advice."

One thing I realized reading Mike B's posts... just because you think the shot is great, doesn't mean that it is. I now know most of my shots are crap... or, you know, boring to others.

No way. Troy is tame by comparison. There is no replacement for Mike B.

Mike B.'s debates were pretty much always circular. I remember creating a Merry-Go-Round image of Mike B.'s arguments/logic that I would post when the wheel would start to spin.

Troy... if Mike B was a bottle of Grolsch... you are a Larger and Lime...

Like I said before... I really liked the guy... even with the fact that I wanted to drive to where he lived and give him a black eye a couple times.

You like to stir the pot... he wanted to blow the pot up.

Nothing wrong with being a larger and lime... I like them too.

All of the smiles are confusing me. Is there an inside joke or something?

Anyway, is there a problem with storing cameras facing up? That is always how mine is stored in the case.

There isn't a problem with a camera facing ANY direction. Hence the Mike B. jokes and the link I provided above.

And what smilies are you referring to?

I was actually beginning to think that something could happen based on the storage of the camera. I shot a few photos with my 50D and brand new 24-105mm lens today, and the quality of the image was not overly impressive. That seems to be the way with every single image I take. It seems that every shot up until July or so of last year was fine quality wise, but after that month the quality has gone down. Looking at other RP shots that were shot with similar equipment, I am a little disappointed. Maybe the shots aren't that bad and I am just being to critical of my own shots.
