Default RPNet Convention

If there ever was a get together, which there won't be, where would we have it?

East, Central, North, South, West USA - another country?
Specific spot? Altoona, PA - Cajon?

I vote somewhere West US.

I've often thought about this and really wish people cared enough to go through with it and participate but that would be mean adjusting schedules, vacations, etc. and with families that can be tough. For bachelors/bachelorettes it is pretty easy to up and go away for a long weekend or just a few days.

I would say somewhere in Nebraska would be suitable for a nationwide event. More reasonable would be to have smaller "conventions" in a specific location in each region such as Folkston, GA for the "South" or somewhere in Chicago, IL for the "Central".

I would really love to see something like this happen. Unfortunately, nothing was planned for the 5th year anniversary of RP.

Why not try including a little RP.net sub gathering before/after something like this: http://www.railphoto-art.org/conference/

If I can scrounge the money together, I'd love to go to this conference.

Nick B. was talking about getting something together for some of us that live in the Twin Cities area. May meet around Dayton's Bluff if it were to happen.

I think the regional (or sub-regional) idea is best... set aside a couple of weekends, wait for the weather to cooperate, and get out there and meet some other folks from your area. Spend a few hours of nice morning light shooting, and then sit down for lunch somewhere... or something. That'd be fun (and relatively inexpensive) compared to attempting a "national" event.

Another interesting idea would be to get as many photographers within a 1 or 2 mile stretch and see how many unique angles of the same train can be captured. In an area like St. Paul, you could easily get 10 or so different (and interesting) angles within that distance. Hell, if it works out well, we could start regional foamer gangs - pick a day and see if the Pittsburgh, St. Paul, or Cajon Pass guys do best.

Luckily for me, I suspect I could get both Travis and Mike B on my team

If it gets more then 300 miles one way, it makes a for a short weekend and a lot of driving. But am open to making a run North to M&StP or one of the Nice parks a long the river and tracks.

I live a 12 hour drive from either Vancouver, Edmonton, or Calgary - so I guess Burns Lake is out for a gathering place eh?

Someone's gonna have to be in charge of bringing a bunch of mailboxes, picket fences, old gas pumps, junk automobiles, cardboard cut outs of women, etc...

Would there be a private VIP meeting room for the "elite" members?

I like the idea!

Vegas is pretty cheap to fly into from most anywhere at the right time. Now that Chris Kilroy has posted a picture of his house on the forums, let's say we all meet up there in on the 26th, after Christmas? I'm sure he'd be happy to spring for chips and beer!

Seriously, it's a good idea. Maybe we could piggyback it on top of a future event where many members are likely to be anyway. I'll be at the Steam table but feel free to come by.

Yes, of course, although none of us will go there. Additionally, we'll constantly tell the non-elites that they've just won an iPod nano.

Oh, now there's an idea. Let me look into my crystal ball....

Me: Honey, do you mind if I fly to Vegas by myself this summer to watch trains with some of the guys from that website I'm always yammering about?

Wife: You want to go to Vegas without me? You'll just be chasing trains you say?

Me: Yep, that's exactly the idea.

Wife: That couch looks comfy doesn't it?

Me: I understand. Instead I'll we'll go shopping and then we can spend the weekend hanging out with your parents.

Wife: That's an awesome idea!

Me: (Weeping softly)

Me: Hey, remember that trip to Vegas I mentioned the other day?

Wife: (Giving me death look)

Me: Yeah, well, uh... Mitch thought it'd be cool if you cam too. He's the guy with the pan shots I keep yammering about.

Wife: (Giving me death look)

Me: Well, uh, you know...

Wife: We haven't gone to visit our friends in Oklahoma, Florida, or Hawaii yet, and you want me to take time off to go to Vegas and watch trains with strangers?! What about all of those bills?

Me: (Grabbing pillow and blanket from closet...)

Not going to happen for me, not anytime in the next few years anyway. St. Paul's close, Chicago might be doable, but not Vegas.

I've heard such rumors ... which is why Kelly Lynch can bring his semi-automatic and play on my team.
