Basically "switching duties" refers to a crew working in a yard sorting out cars so they can be placed on other trains or be spotted at a customer's location.

Thats a VERY general idea of what it is...but I hope that gives you an idea..

Actually, that is a very good question ICE.
Switching duties refers to assignments done by a yard switcher (usually one to two different locomotives, depending on how big the yard is) either in a yard, on an interchange, or even on local industries located trackside. Consists will usually be no longer than 5 to 10 cars and typically travel at low speeds. Switching duty trains are most often low priority trains.

To clear that up, I was un-aware that Chris had just posted minutes before me. It actually took me about 3 minutes to respond. He posted at 6:21, and I started to write at about 6:25 and posted at 6:28.
