Default Opinion on these rejects

Hi everyone, today i went out and did some work and i though it was quite well and i'm quite baffled that they both got rejected.
http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...&key=306571976 This one rejected for backlight, now look above the engine number on the left and you see the sun. Your ideas?

http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...&key=906042097 This one the old erie turntable i thought would be great in black and white, rejected for bad esthetic quality, would my color shot be better?

1st shot is in harsh blue light with 3/4 of the nose shadowed.

first: my opinion matches Travis'

second: not a fan, not sure why, in part because it is a straight down the middle shot, in part because the background/sides are distracting (left) or dull (right). You could appeal, this sort of abandonment shot is very subjective. You could reshoot with more of a side view. "My favorite aspect of turntables is their depth, their "bridge"ness.

On the second one - what is you're intended subject? If it is the turntable, the straight on down centre view has little appeal.
If it is the coach framed by the turntable, then zoom in and crop (vertical?) off the dead space on the turntable.
Nice texture and b&w subject.
