Post CSX Mountain Sub derailment

Monday, Feb. 17th of 2013's accident sounds very similar to the 2000 derailment where almost all the cars left the track. In that accident it was determined that CSX depended to much on the locomotives dynamic braking to hold back the train on the 17 Mile Grade from Altamont to Bloomington. Is there any forum contributor who can give us any additional eyes on the ground insite on this recent accident? Are there any pictures from the 2000 wreck or this wreck that can be posted in this thread?

There is a full report online about the 2000 derailment that can be found via google search, and it's a very detailed read.

Apparently from my sources, this time the train (with 4 units up front) went into emergency at 15mph on the grade, and stopped. The conductor went to start tying brakes and the train began to roll. He jumped back on and down the grade they went reaching 51mph before dumping 74-75 of the 78 car consist about 3 miles up from Bloomington. No injuries reported on this one thank goodness.

Sounds like they ran out of air even though they got it stopped and that they couldn't get enough air pressure restored fast enough.

I think that maybe for trains like this where they know the grades are steep (>2%) and long, maybe they should incorporate a compressed air car mid-train. The compressed air car could contain a large air tank and a diesel powered compressor.

Hopefully the NTSB won't find CSX negligent in following the recommendations offered from the previous accident.

Really bad. 75 of the 78 cars went off the tracks!

Ryan, that image is from a completely different derailment. I doubt we'll see any photos from the seventeen mile grade derailment. The area is inaccessible by legal means.

The events were actually almost so identical that some of the information from the 2000 derailment carried over into the most recent derailment this week, making it difficult to get accurate facts.

Per today's reports, all 70+ cars have been removed from the ROW and much of the line has been restored. Ballast is all that needs to be laid and that's been slightly delayed as a result of cold weather.

I doubt we'll see photos, if any due to the severe inaccessibility of the derailment. Thankfully there were no injuries to the crew. That's a miracle in itself.

I checked the NTSB website for a report on the 2013 derailment but I didn't have any luck finding the report. Are not all the NTSB's reports posted on their website? Surely this accident investigation has to have been completed.

NTSB doesn't get in any hurry. It can take up to 3 years post incident for it to be finalized and public.

Typical service from the government. I had to go to the SS Office for an issue. Nice new building with nine service windows and only one was open!
