In the world of preserved steam, there are not many examples of multiple, operable locomotives that are identical, and it is even rarer to find two identical engines that are located on the same rails, so they can operate together. Mitch posted one such situation, which is EBT 14 & 15. His was a good catch. The 14 is no longer legal to operate, and the 15....well, she's not likely to run anytime soon either.

The only other situation that immediately comes to mind is the old D&RGW K-28 and K-36 classes. AFAIK, these are the only steam locomotive "classes" that survive to any significant degree. In the case of the K-36s, ten locomotives were built. Nine are still in existence. Eight still operate, four of which are on the Durango & Silverton, and four are on the Cumbres & Toltec. Although double-heading does happen on the D&S, it is fairly rare. It is more common on the Cumbres & Toltec, either on fall colors trains, or on photo charters. For just $12,000 per day, per locomotive, you too can see a matched set run:

Hard to beat matched newness:

And pretty much my entire Alaska collection, to include "matched entire train":

And I haven't shared it anywhere online yet, but last week I caught a matched trio of H2 Dash 9s. No GEVOs, no Swoosh, just H2. Never thought the day would come when a BNSF train with nothing but matched Dash 9s would be "noteworthy"...
