Default Numberboard Question

Here something I've been wondering for a while, its a pretty insignifcant but here it is anyways; why do the western roads (BNSF, UP) have white numbers on a black background and the eastern roads (NS, CSXT) has black numbers on white background?

Ive seen BNSF and UP with both arrangements. But thats a good question. Maybe some look better w/ different paint schemes. East coast RRs paints seem to be darker (black, blue, etc) and west coast seem to be lighter (silver, yellow, orange, etc). Durability maybe? Good though though, and thats my $.02 on it.

interesting question...

my initial thought/question was, "are the number boards reversible for better day or night visibility?"

i went back and looked at some of my pics and didn't see any rhyme or reason for the number boards shown. some looked like it may have been possible for the number boards to reverse. others did not.

is the color scheme related to the loco manufacturer?

Not that I can tell, I've looked back at my collection (mostly NS and CSX) and almost without expection of age, model or builder the number boards are black on white. Also, all examples of western power I have in my collection is white on black regardless of of age, model or buidler.
