Default Stenciled M-N Road Number

I took a photo of a Metro-North cab car this afternoon. When I checked it out later on I noticed its road number was stenciled beneath the engineer's window in a makeshift manner. Does anyone know why? Was this cab car wrecked or re-built or something?

To see the photo click here: www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=79679

For comparison with a similar cab car see: www.geocities.com/dnsommer/compare.jpg

Thanks in advance,

Dave S.

The car number was raised when the ditch lights were added.
