l would like to know if any union pacific railfans could tell me when is u]Union Pacific northern844 4-8-4 going to be back in se l just wonder l see a lot of photos of challenger 3985 4-6-6-4 l also a big fan of EMD E9 951 hope to hear from some of you union pacific railfans bigboy4020

I was also wondering where 844 had gone. I had ridden behind it in 1997(?) from Elmhurst, IL to Clinton, Iowa I think. After that I don't remember hearing about it again. It's been all 3985 these past two years. Does UP only want to operate one steam locomotive?

a reported and updated at RPYN, the 844 is undergoing an extensive rebuild, including mass amounts of boiler work, new flues, almost a complete new firebox, running gear and so on. it is reportly still a work in progress, but they said to look for it next year if all goes well..

the same people that run the 3985 also are doing the work on 844, and with then being on the road so much this year, work had slowed to a crawl on her.

Your question started me thinking about the 844 and and riding behind it back in 1982. I pulled out my slides of the 844 (8444 at the time) last week, ran my favorite one through the scanner and posted it:
