Should have been shot as a vertical. Half the shot was cut off.

These are typical of what you take when you are first learning. There is a LOT to learn about using the angle of light, it's intensity, and how to create that elusive sense of mood. Some people do get into a rut and don't move on from there though (just like daytime wedgies.) Once you get the basics down, you can then start working on the aspects of composition that are unique to the night.

Troy, for RP, don't enter "N&W 611", RP can't handle the ampersand. Irritating but true - click on "N&W 611" in your rejection screen and see how many photos are shown. Put in "NW 611". Or BO for B&O, CO for C&O, etc.

Here you go:

If you do open a Flickr account, send me a link. I mostly do the Flickr thing because I just don't need the drama. My photography is more about my own self expression and not so much about "getting accepted" by some arbitrary panel. I assume that the majority of people will not like my images, and I'm OK with that.

The downside to Flickr is the "Discussion" section on the various groups are very weak. RPnet does have the best forum going. Maybe the tag line should be changed to, "Best RR photography forum on the net!"?

Flickr is not a substitute for RP, just different. I use both, plus my own website. All have their pluses and minus, and can serve different purposes.

I am questioning the purposes RP serves anymore. Views are WAY, WAY down. I'm getting around 200 views on the first day of posting stuff, which is nuts. After that drops to a trickle.

Unless you link the shit out of your photos and whore them all over facebook and yahoo groups

Some members praise RP for the search function. But the list of things it doesn't find is way too long for my taste. A few examples: "New Haven Railroad" "New Brunswick" "New Hope" "2-6-6-2". "New York, New Haven & Hartford" is even on the drop-down menu, yet nothing is found.

I think the issue there, is, believe it or not; RP will not accept the word "new" in a search.

Try removing that one key word, or use others, for instance, instead of "New""Hope", try "Hope" and "Pennyslvania" or "Ivyalnd". Or "NHIRR". Once you find one image, you can find most by clicking on one of thie fields, ie; locomotive number.

Another issue, other then not being able to search symbols (&), is that you can not search numbers less then 3 digits. 40 is out, but 1309 is fine.

Thanks for the tip. It has always annoyed the crap out of me that a search for "New Richmond" turned up nothing.

So, like the word "new," is this why you can't search for Union Pacific locomotives by the reporting marks? Is "UP" too common like "new"?

I mentioned you can not search numerals less then 3 digitis. I think the same applies to text. UP, CP, BN... no go.

They don't like American photos with not enough light on the nose either. http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...17&key=1670001 I was expecting a composition rejection, but nope, this is the lame excuse they came up with instead. Since I can't appeal because I've not been the most polite person in the world questioning their reasoning or lack there of, I'm bitching here.

^ sorry, both of the 2 above photos are pretty mediocre

The presence of semaphores or steam does not give a photo a free pass

Indecline, this shot would be at the low end of your quality range and with regular signals you wouldn't even think of uploading. And you have two other shots of those semaphore shots recently accepted. I have no objection to the rejection. Sorry to be harsh.

It's kind of an awkward composition to my eyes. I would have rejected it for that.

I agree if they had rejected it for composition - what I don't agree with, is their hang up about light on the nose, it's arbitrary and has nothing to do with the merit of any specific photo.
