Curious, Ron, as to why you like "quite a bit" a plain wedgie with a bad sky. And a branch that didn't much distract me until pointed out but now seems a bit obtrusive.

To me, it may be fine as a railfan shot but it does't meet the standard that, ostensibly!, RP is trying to uphold. So properly rejected.

Maybe, lol.

A search on RP for photos of EMD SD60's shows:
Your search returned 5,188 photos.

As for the branch - the reality is in fact, that the shot as captured does not work. That's why most of us search far and wide for better locations!

And jeeze Louise, again - what's with deal with accepting shots of common power and common livery that feature completely overcast skies?

Ron - you say you like it but you have not added your name to the list of 3 that favorited the shot. Nor added to the non-existent comments. I don't think you like it all that much.

I'd be curious as to why it was even submitted. A few guesses:
1) I just started shooting trains a few months ago.
2) Anything CP is awesome to me.
3) I love me a good branch.
4) It's in my neighborhood.
5) I was on vacation and it's the only train I caught.
5b) I like RP's map feature and needed a dot there.
6) My little sister (or brother) took this while hanging out with me.
7) My friends dared me to submit to RP.
Ron told me to take it.

I rarely "favorite" a shot, rarely comment, and never, ever vote for PCA. I don't know why....I just don't.

You guys are all making valid comments that this isn't a great shot. It isn't. But it's an acceptable shot. It's not an F....but it could be a C minus, or maybe a D, and for all the reasons cited. It passed, but it will never make the honor roll.

Don't think that only the "best" shots reside in this data base--because they don't. A lot of great shots are on RP, but then many more are just...well....adequate. It's not too hard to get a shot posted on RP as long as you're basically competent as a photographer, and follow the basics of decent photography. Not hard at all.

I said the shot was okay. I didn't say it was the finest thing since sliced bread. But I will say.....that was an odd choice to call out as a "bad" shot, since there are a crap-load of shots that are far worse.

It's a lot like the guy who finishes dead last in academic standing in his graduation class from medical school. What do you call him?

"Doctor"

But....which is the greatest sin: Photoshopping out a branch, or actually cutting it in the field? In both cases, it's "scenery modification." Choose your sin, I guess (although within reason, both are okay with me).

I don't know if these things boost views on RP, but on Flickr, they are excellent publicity. I've changed my mind about not "following" as well. The more links the better!

Comments are a little difficult, though. It's so hard to avoid clichés.

Photoshoping.

Do you have any idea how much time I spend looking for good shots along the NEC in PA and NJ? You don't need to cut the branch nor Photoshop - some shots simply do not work where you stand.

You can't cut down catenary to get a better shot...

If the lines around us were electrified Ron, you'd see them cut down so they could steal the wire and sell it for meth money.. lol

When trimming or cutting trees, "within reason" is defined by how much you can get away with before you get caught.

You got that right, Loyd!! Same here. They've been known to steal air conditioner/heat pump coils in the middle of the night. If I wake up cold one morning, I'll know mine have been ripped off.

What I meant, is sometimes "where you're standing" is not the best place to take the shot. I can't cut down catenary poles but I can position myself between them, butt up against one, or by the odd support that does not have a crossbeam in an effort to avoid distractions such as cut off structures or shadows.

The last RR cop I encountered informed me that I was in their database and "next time" would have consequences. So I'm not so much anti-trespassing as anti-consequences.

Reminds me of people who bitch about speeders and then they themselves drive 5mph over the limit.

I don't bitch about speeders and I drive 10MPH over the limit (on the main highway, that is). I'm very careful, though...

So what you're saying is that you trespass yourself and have no problem with trespassers, right?
