Default These suck or not?

Most of these got composition or cropping. I have some ideas of what to do except #1, i'm not sure what they are looking for from this on and #3, not seeing the bad color.

I like #2. Maybe it can be cropped a bit and do some photoshop magic to get it on. interesting composition. how often do you have a forest fire in the background?

#4 too centered.

#1 I guess they don't like it. what can you do?

#3 I dunno. looks like a little pink cast. maybe needs more contrast.

All look like grab shots. So, to answer your original question...

1: no suggestions - not my kind of shot
2: I think you want the train 2/3 across, so try the next frame or two
3: no suggestions
4: it has a wide-ish feel in general, and the foreground is a bit strong and uninteresting. Crop bottom and left; you are cutting into the thing on the left already so cut into it more.

Naturally, but the next frame, the lead unit dives into the shadows.

#1 is a prime candidate for foreground clutter... the foreground tracks are hiding a part of the trucks... bring a ladder next time?

All of them are crap. Except #2. Which is probably one of the better shots I've seen from you, if you processed it a bit more strikingly. Maybe something like this?

Troy, I just don't get it. Why do you compose your images so horribly? Really? They're almost all centered in some way. Up or down or right to left. It also just doesn't make sense to me why you aren't producing better images. Go out and take some real good stuff, man! Understand this is absolutely nothing against you personally, I just don't get why you come home with the relative crap that you do.

Then crop it so it gets further across, remove left and top, or some such.

That's the only one of the group I liked at all---but I did like number 2 (if you recropped it, and maybe juiced up the fire behind just a bit).

I do like Ron's crop of #2 a lot. Most of these shots are centered vertically, esp. #1. Broadside shots can be hard to shoot really nicely. I'm not a big fan of the cropping on #3, but they only gave you Bad Color, so if you can fix that, you might be fine. On #4, I feel like I need to duck when viewing it because of the ratio. I'd include more sky, but also take out a bit on the left.

Is it centered? Yes. Need to kick some more off the bottom and off the right or left, RP would probably prefer the left. And also, it needs more contrast, to be darker and a little less red. That done, and you'd have a winner. And the "this" you refer to doesn't do enough of any of that, IMHO.

The first one the train being on the far track is hurting you. On the plus though you got the only Horsehead GP50.

Second other people have chimed in already.

Third fix the color, the composition isnt too bad, its different from the normal cordele diamond shot.

The fourth you need to crop out the HOG diamond, either you loose the diamond or have a pole through the cab. Also I think thats train 295 and it was on the 16th? I know it had a fresh painted C40-8W on the 16th.

It was the 15th. I was in Waycross on the 16th.

That one got on...

The fire shot got rejected for color.
http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...key=1162214857

I went with this crop because I wanted to include more of the second unit.

In the fire shot, show the entire second unit and knock a little more off the bottom. Then you're golden.

Coincidence I guess then.

I love it when they add additional reasons to the reject after the fact. I think I am gonna shelve this. Maybe if I resubmit it 2 years later, they will let it on

While I love the color version, the textures in the sky, the lead engine, and the shadows in the foreground may work in B&W. Its a great photo. I really like it. To bad the "almighty" screener's don't agree.

EDIT:
Here is what I came up with. Leveled, sharpened, and converted to black and white with emphasis on pulling mid tones to accentuate textures. It may be centered, not inline with the 3rds, noisy, and whatever else but I like it! haha

The color's fine...but you centered the train top to bottom, rather than pull it down in the frame. I suspect that's why you were gigged with the "bad cropping" door prize.

It's BW, you have to spread the histogram more than that! BW is about tonality! BW is about tonality! BW is not about gray!

See attached for one suggestion, I didn't spend a lot of time with it, time to go to bed. I could have spread it more but it didn't look quite right and, well, it is time to go to bed.
