So, what actually got into your head, lo these many decades ago, to actually turn around and shoot in the other direction that day?

Um... a northbound came?

(Actually, most of the time, northbounds were coming out of the sun, so unless it was very overcast, NB pics were pretty useless... even for historic value.)

As an aside, this area was the Haworth depot, when commuter trains still stopped here. It was once a very heavy commuter line (I honestly wonder if it isn't the heaviest "steam railroad" commuter line to be completely abandoned in the USA).

I don't have a problem with creating threads that encourage conversation because as you said, this is a discussion forum and that's what it's about. My problem is when people post some of their photos not to start conversation, but to get a couple extra views. Supposedly, that's not what this particular thread is about though.

If you want more views don't start a thread just put a girl in the shot. Not calling anyone out this is a great shot even without the girl.

Which locations have the highest number of accepted shots on RailPictures from?

(As in, the most used hackspots on this site.)

Time to feed the troll...

Mike, the burden of proof is on you. You have made an outlandish statement. If you can back it up, then it isn't outlandish. So, please explain, either using your personal knowledge of the person or by using logic, why would a person like Joe with 600,000 views care about the few additional views he gets by doing this thread?

Excluding a rail yard, here is my spot. Looking through my photos I really don't a location that I can shoot many angles of. So my hats of to you that can.

I'm going to for once actually take a side in these arguments, and side with everyone else (i.e. not Mike B.). As has been said, this is a discussion forum about photography, thus, the topics of these threads is to discuss some aspect of photography. You couldn't have these kinds of threads without the photos. Otherwise, it wouldn't be a photography discussion forum. I personally enjoy these threads as they're a wonderful break from the usual monotonous (though necessary and helpful) rejection threads.

Anyways, back on topic. All of these shots were taken over the course of a summer easily within a 100 yards of each other. I still have a few other different angles from this spot that I never got around to editing.

Nearly half of my photos in the database where taken within a mile of each other. But some within a football field are below.

What is wrong with you? I don't know how many times I have to say it, but I'm not against having a discussion with photos, I've even participated in a few. What I'm against is posting your own photos in a thread just to gain a few views. Can you or anyone else make the distinction between the two?

Thank you to those who actually got the gist of this thread and to those of you who participated. It's good to know I'm not the only one. Most of my shots over the last two years take place in a five mile radius mainly due not having money or time to go elsewhere. It can be hard to get a lot of different views in urban settings like Columbia sometimes.

Mike, what's the point of you even bothering to bring this up? You've proven in the past that you're the type who'll handcuff themselves (i.e. only use a tripod, no open cab doors, etc.) and then assume an air of superiority over everyone who doesn't do it your way. Your way to get views is to take a nice photo and let the result speak for itself. If others want to post a bunch of thumbs on the forums or links on yahoo groups to garner views, that's their way. No need to raise a fuss about it. It's apples to oranges.

I wasn't trying to get people to do things my way in my last post. It appears that people misunderstood what I meant and I was just trying to correct it.

Well, I have no idea what you mean at this point, but I hope the following helps.

What you haven't gotten, Mike, is that the photos ARE the discussion. Joe named a theme and others develop it with photos. One doesn't need many words for a photography discussion.

Perhaps you have forgotten the hackneyed saying that a picture is worth a thousand words.

Frankly, you are mentally stuck on this belief of yours, not a fact you are stating but a belief of yours, that the motivation is to gain a few views. Until you get past that mental blockade in your head, which means facing the possibility of being totally, completely wrong, you will never understand.

That doesn't qualify as a discussion; it's a gallery.

Until these threads move beyond the "Oh shoot, I just missed out on the top 2 of the day" or "(person 3) here are a few of my photos that meet this threads criteria, (person 4) oh, and here are a few of mine, (person 5) here are some of mine" I will still believe that it's more about trying to gain some views and positive comments than it is about having an actual discussion. I think that because there just isn't much of a discussion going on. It's just a bunch of people posting a couple of sentences and a half a dozen photos. Until there is a discussion consisting of more then an explanation of the photos to follow, I can't help but think it's about the photos and not the discussion.

So, yes, you are correct. I will continue to think this until I'm provided with evidence to prove otherwise. I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree...again.

Ok, that is a better term, I agree. So, back in your court; please explain what is wrong with a gallery. We are sharing pictures.

And your expectations are totally reasonable for someone to have. But if the forum doesn't follow your expectations, try to keep your disdain to yourself, and try not to make baseless and (still!) unsupported statements about other people's motivation, just because they do something that you don't care for.

If you had said "hey, guys, this is inappropriate for this forum, IMHO" I would have understood. Disagreed, but understood. It would have been consistent with what you just posted. Your original post was not.
