I prefer freight trains mainly because that's just about all I see. I don't mind passenger trains but, hey, a train's a train!

ooh, poor ICE. All alone...

I'll join you. Only reason I have gotten into trains is because I ride them daily, well I used to until I graduated school a few months back. Only interested in passenger trains. Freight trains I find to be uninteresting. They only slow down the real trains by blocking the track!

That's a tough question. I guess I lean towards freight, but not too far in any one direction. Of course, in the U.S. a person is lucky if there is a passenger train within 50 miles. It's easier to take pictures of a moving passenger train that's for sure. I can get off quite a few more shots of a slow freight as compared to a fast Acela.

Here in Central KY, out prospects of shooting passenger trains are rather limited. Amtrak did away with 850/851, and the 50/51 that runs on the C&O is usually nocturnal. I wont say I dont shoot passenger, because I do every chance I get, but that is not very often...

personaly, I find these new Amtrak GE's to lack any sort of personality, inside or out!! They are all UGLY, and even the sound is very uninspired. Now, if we still had the likes of FA's, E8's or even the F40ph, that would be a differnt story!!!

Watching the freight roll by.....

I'll have to go with freight trains.

Don't get me wrong, I'll photograph all the passenger trains I see, but I just can't get excited about the Genesis cans.

Always a little variety in freight power, and since the demise of the SDP40F and the F40PH on Amtrak, what's left outside the NE corridor? There aren't enough of the F59PHI units in service!

I can see that most people don't like passenger as much simply because of the limited variety and quatity. I can understand that. I grew up in Germany, now in Europe...that's a whole different story!

I for one, would love it if passenger trains would make a comeback, I don't mean subways or Amtrack, although they are wonderful people movers. I mean the streamliners of the '40s & '50s. Those were some stunning machines. I'm also talking from no first hand knowledge, just a 40 year old fan of the days gone by I guess.

To me, nothing is as impressive as a 10,000+ ton, mile and a half long freight train blowing by you at 60 mph, or the same train shaking the ground as it struggles its way up a hill through beautiful, mountainous surroundings..
