Default UP Should Be Ashamed

It's a nice photo. He captured the scene very well, but I sure wish UP would have the decency to wash their locomotives if they are going to paint an American flag on the side, esp. ones hauling military gear.

I'm right there with ya. It was a great concept at first, but UP took it too far in applying it to so many units. Should have stopped after 100 or so.

I always thought it was tacky. Just like the wings. They look silly on anything but an E unit or something like an F or Alco PA/FA.

I thought that the wings and the CNWeque lightning stripe behind the cab were much needed improvements to the UP scheme. The flag on the other hand I've never been a fan of, the name Union Pacific is hard to find on the units.

The lightning stripe thing is fine, but I think the wings are pretty tacky. I think maybe a bigger logo (shield thing) would work well.

Never had a problem with the wings. Much better than that worthlessly small logo they used to put on everything.

Let's meet halfway.. Have UP start applying this nose logo again!

With the number in 10 different places on the unit, just a little bit overkill. Note the trailer with the UP wings back there!

One thing I think even you all will admit, when they applied the wings to the 6936, that made it look terrible.

Almost as bad as that hack job they did on the noses of the E units (removing the doors)

My first post here.
I feel UP shouldn't take the whole blame for the engine looking dingy, the only cloud in the sky blocked the sun on the lead unit causing it to look worse than it actually was.

No excuse at all. There are thousands of flag-schemed units on UP's roster, and a good 40-50% (if not more) of them look absolutely awful.

Cloud or no cloud, that unit is one of the many that looks like hell, and it's a complete disgrace.

To say that UP needs to keep their flag units clean is a little strange. It is a railroad, after all, and the railroad world is dirty. Joe, are you trying to say that UP is unpatriotic because the flag units are dirty? Why should UP come under fire for something like that? Where are the flags on BNSF locomotives? NS? CSX? As far as I know, UP is the most patriotic system out there. Sure, they aren't always clean, but it is a railroad, after all.

Now, saying the flag looks tacky is a whole different point. I personally don't think the flag looks better or worse than the "old" UP scheme. The scheme with 1o road numbers is a little over the top though.

Yes, railroads are dirty, engines are going to be dirty, but if you're going to put the flag of our country on your engines, they should at least be making some sort of effort to keep them clean, which they aren't.

Yes, what he said. It was a poorly thought out idea to begin with. The RR cant, and shouldnt be expected to go out and keep the flag units clean, or even just the flags, so they should have never done it to begin with...

This seems like bad risk management by UP. This could wind up on Fox News or some similar venue, go "viral" and generate all sorts of bad publicity. Best to paint them over or apply a new decal or something.

I'm not saying they are not patriotic. I imagine they started putting the flags on their units for the right reasons. Myself, I think seeing a clean flag unit go by is pretty cool. But it is an American flag, even if it is painted on the side of a railroad locomotive, and it should be treated with respect and dignity. UP would not allow a worn and tattered flag to fly outside a yard or their corporate offices; they should not allow them to become this dirty on their rolling stock.

IMO, this is the high water mark for UP paint schemes. Simple, clean lines, classic, classy:

I like simple lightning stripe, personally. Adds a touch of zip.

I thought they put the wings on in recognition of the MoPac takeover of UP!

I think the flag is a pretty sweet logo:

And I think the wings look pretty sweet on the nose, too:

The sun might have gone behind a cloud just before that shot was taken, Jim.

Wings are great, Much needed now the flag is tacky. Just doesn't belong as part of a corporate scheme. A much smaller one like the BN had works for me.
