Default Camera Phone shot in the database?

I know several have pondered if it could be done, especially with the improving quality of camera phones. Thats the only explanation I can come up with for the horrendous quality in this photo. The lack of EXIF data and the overall 'I was walking down and street and stumbled upon this' feel to the shot only supports such a conclusion.

That photo looks like it was printed out with a dried-up old inkjet printer, then scanned on someone's dirty flatbed scanner. I think this is the textbook definition of "Poor Image Quality."

There was a DPR announcement a couple months back on camera phone sensors by Sony:

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0811/08...orcamphone.asp

12 megapixels on a 1/2.5 sensor makes me think it will be noise city.

While I agree, it almost looks like a bad photoshop/cloning job, the photo can't be THAT bad since it has over 1500 unique views, 5 comments, and is favorited 16 times (at this posting).

The people have spoken.

Yes, the photo did get 1500 views, based on a thumbnail that doesn't depict how bad the image quality is. Regardless of how unique the subject matter is, this shouldn't have been accepted, and shouldn't remain in the database.

If this is acceptable, then I should be able to get in photos that are totally out of focus. After all, it's well composed, and the major technical flaw doesn't show in the thumbnail ..... right?

Thumbs down

I can just imagine what the full-sized file looks like.... Oh my!

P.S. If this happens to be a camera phone image, it may be upsized to get the size requirements for the site.... Again, oh my!

Don't worry I agree--- the image quality is beyond poor. But explain the 5 "Atta boy!" comments and 16 favorites? Must be a well liked contributor and/or have an enthusiastic local following.

Can't say the same thing for Renaud Chodkowski who has rejects to his credit like this one attached: (still can't believe it)

I can't agree more in such a small, but strong statement. We all strike down those who do the whole "Theirs got in mine didn't" attack, but this is quite a circumstance. We put a lot into our photography here, and probably more (if in field we accidentally had the wrong shutter/aperture/iso/you name it) in post processing. It takes talent, and sometimes more often than not we can try 5 times to get that same great shot, but just one minor error either in equipment or in user that is hard to fix but you spend countless hour trying to correct it. But to no avail, it gets rejected. We maybe try one more time, if no luck, move on. I'm one of those who just move on. But this....this is just not fair. Clearly this just by luck shot, like others above have said, is horribly messed up. There's no other way to put it, it has odd lines running criss-cross throughout the whole photo. How many times have YOU, users, shot a just by luck shot, and any minor error within the photo gets it rejected?

RP staff/screeners/crew, I respect you. I respect the reasons why some of our shots get rejected, it happens to all of us. So why not let it happen with this? We try just as hard as everyone else and from time to time get shots turned down, what's the special circumstance here?

My bad, there were only 3 positive comments on that photo, not 5. Two appear to be questioning the picture.

Saw this thread jacking coming from a mile away, thus why included the original disclaimer

Anyways... other reasons I think its a camera phone; Obviously, camera phones are all automatic, and in my experience are always set on a low shutter speed and wide open. Now look at the image; slow shutter speed despite it being obviously very sunny. Conversely, blown out sky despite the fact the shot is facing into the sun.

Damn, swing and a miss for me. Not a camera phone at all, just a really poorly done cut and paste. Per fourth post down from the first hit in the detailed photo stats;

Well, with that in mind why is it in the database despite one 1) its digitally manipulated and 2) the quality is embarrassingly poor

I think the lifespan of this photo is now going to be measured in minutes, not hours.

This is very far from an opinion, it is the truth! The photo quality is horrible! I actually think an instamatic one-time-use camera could do a better job!

The positive comments just prove two things:

1. People are suckers
2. People are blind.

Then, of course, there are the blind suckers who are the worst.

Me thinks ole Tim's going to be hearing from the admin here soon. And whoever accepted that shot should also be hearing from the admin as well!

And I couldn't agree more...total views, comments, and favorites mean nothing. Which is why fake-looking pseudo-HDR shots do well in popularity, but it doesn't mean they're good...

Obviously this photo's acceptance was a mistake, and it's been removed from the site now. Thanks for pointing it out, John!
