Backlit (well, of course!)

So, I really like this one, but I wasn't sure how the screeners would. They decided to point the obvious.

Those two rejections are simply trying to tell you that your attempts weren't good enough to be accepted. It's obvious of your attempts, they just don't work.

To me, one thing that doesn't make the Backlit shot work is out of your control -- the fact that it's light power. A train trailing down the track would be much more asthetically pleasing to my eye. But there is also some Bad Color and Bad Contrast going on there, too.

Here I sit wondering "what in the world is wrong with his second rejection?" I don't see anything that makes it "not good enough."

My thought: Where's the obstruction? The sign is framing the train. If you're going to reject the shot at least do it for the correct reason, which to me would be (if anything) bad cropping.

Well, I kind of like the fact that the trailing unit's red lights are on. I agree that it would be better with a long train climbing up the hill, though. I'll have to try this one again. Would you have any advice to make the color and contrast better? I'm definately keeping this one for my personal collection, and would love to improve it some more if I can.

My thoughts, exactly! I could have shot this one wedgie style, but I thought the light power was particularly well suited for this shot idea... oh well, at least I tried!

Everyone would be better served if the screeners would just say "PEQ" to the shots they don't like.

Makes you wonder if they hit the wrong rejection. I've seen plenty of shots through signs and fences like this that don't get rejected, so perhaps it should have been bad cropping or PEQ. The foreground obstruction/clutter doesn't stand up when this exact technique has been accepted time and time again on RP.

Perhaps the bad cropping leads to the cluttered foreground? Hmm...

Agreed. That's strong wording from a screener, that the attempts, especially the second one, don't work. Photographers here are encouraged to think outside the box and be creative, and when their creativity is met with heavy-handed resistance, it leaves a bad taste in their mouth. I agree with the bad cropping suggestion, as I would tighten it up to get rid of the road at right, but there is no foreground obstruction, and it is a creative framing of a light engine shot.
