Is that some kind of self-imposed rule you have? Have you never just randomly cropped a vertical picture out of an original horizontal photo?

Anyway, here's a scan of one of my favorite prints from this camera, it's the only good one I have scanned atm. Scanning a neg doesn't give quite as much editing ability as darkroom printing.
What are we looking at? A trail down the side of a hill with a bunch of ugly power lines in the background? What is it about that photo that makes it your favorite?

You just don't like it because it doesn't have a train in it, actually.

Matt, I'm with Jim. I love all sorts of photography, I don't need a train. This one is a compositional mess. Well, that is too strong, but it doesn't come close to holding together in my book, a jumble of elements that might work well separately, in other images, combined here look rather poor.

And so far below your usual I'm actually a more than a bit puzzled as to what you see in it.

What does a train in a photo have to do with anything? I was just wondering what I'm supposed to be looking at in the photo. It looks like you pulled over on the side of a road and quickly snapped a shot of the setting sun. Am I close?

J summed it up best:
