Default Speedlight thoughts...recommendations?

I'm thinking of purchasing an external flash unit. I have Nikon equipment and my initial thought was to stay with the brand. The primary application would be fill flash for photographing people, as well as supplemental lighting for shooting indoors. The thought of being able to shoot live equipment at night from relatively close ranges has also crossed my mind.

Does anyone have experience with the Nikon SB-600? If so, I'd like to hear your review.

There are off brands (Sigma etc) with more power at a lower price. Does anyone have any experience with those on a Nikon?

I'd also appreciate any general thoughts on the usefulness of flash in rail photography in general.

My RP stuff is here.

Link to my Flickr Albums. Lots of Steam Railroad stuff there from all over the US.

I have purchased and R1C1 set up from Nikon. I'm really happy with it. It can be used as a ring flash or set up remotely and they are compact. Provides very nice lighting effects as they can be set up on tripods and aimed all sorts of ways. You can add as many flash units as you'd like and set them up in groups.

a Nikon flash with TTL is a very nice all-purpose unit to have in your bag
