Default New G&W shortline

On July 1, 2012 G&W started operations on a former NS branch line from Columbus, GA south about 30 miles to the major paper mill at Mahrt, AL. Name of the new line is Columbus and Chattahoochee. Here are a few photos of the initial run from Columbus south on the morning of July 1.

Leaving home base at the former GSW yard at Columbus

Crossing the Chattahoochee River and entering Alabama

Getting up to track speed (25mph) leaving Phenix City

They have taken over the former GSW yard in Columbus, will station one GP38 there for yard and local duties. Normal road power will be two of the SD40-2 (ex BN). Temporary power at this time for switching the paper mill will be a couple of GP38, but there are supposed to be a couple of SW1500 coming.

Thanks. I left Columbus and now I am in LaFayette, GA checking out the Chattooga and Chickamauga, another G&W property. I'll post some photos of this op when I get a chance.

Let me put on my magic cap and say CCKY 1804 in G&W orange facing south, CCKY 102 in original C&C gray and blue sitting in front of the depot. I was just there yesterday morning. I had always wanted to get the units posed up with the depot, and after many years of driving through LaFayette to go to Lookout Mountain, it finally came together on yesterday's pass.

Be sure to post a picture. Today the 102 is sitting in the siding at LaFayette and the 1804 is tied down on the main at Rock Spring where it will start the day tomorrow. Thank goodness it has A/C.
