Default To patch a Tunnel Motor...

HI-

As some of you may know, I am an avid model railroader. I model the modern Union Pacific mostly, with some Montana Rail Link and 1970s BN on the side. I was hoping to make an HO scale model of a Southern Pacific SD45T-2, but with Union Pacific patches on it.

So my question is, does anyone know where I can find a roster shot of such a tunnel motor? I have look thru the railpictures.net database and found nothing, and I have never seen one in my own travels, as I think they are all in UP paint by now, or the ones still in SP paint are being used as GE leasers.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to find a photograph of a patched SD45T-2. You should simply go ahead and get a SD45T-2 body and patch away. If you surf on the net you'll find re-painted "Union Pacific" units shown as SD40T-2's and a number of photos of patched SD40T-2's. Some of the 40's have 3 radiator fans (small aluminium squares on the hatches above the radiator air intakes) meaning the units (or part of the units) were originally SD45T-2's.

Note that this unit, UP 2861 has three radiator fans. It is the former UP 4829 which was formerly the SP 6852 and was called a SD45T-2R by that railroad after rebuilding. (I wasn't able to find the original number which would have been either an SP or a SSW unit in the 9166 - 9404 series.

If you check some of the sites below you'll note that some SD40T-2 rebuilds had 20 cylinder engines derated to 3200 horse power. Such units mightg return to 3600 hp if the governor was changed. Other rebuilds had 16-cylinder 3000hp engines.


UP 2861 (SD40-2T), was renumbered from UP 4829 on 1/15/02

UP 4829, is the ex SP 6852 (SD45T-2R)

Thank you very much for all this good info! I had never taken into accound the rebuilds. So, it would be prototypical to find a patched SD45T-2 body, even if it would be an SD40T-2 internally, correct?

Correct. Only challenge would be if you want an accurate locomotive number. Then you'll have to spend some time on those sites researching the unit's history.

Here's by far the most interesting patched SP unit I've ever seen, plus it's a tunnel motor! If I ever pulled the airbrushes out again, this would definitely be one of my first projects. Hope this helps as well!

Wesley, thank you for the detail shot if the UP patch, that will for sure help! That lettering is very cool!

Now to just find a correct roadnumber...

There are still several patched tunnel motors floating around. We had a patched SP unit in one of the yards here in Portland Oregon last week.
