Default Dark Cloudy Day

http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...&key=432732159

I really like this shot, and I'm not convinced it needs to be brightened. I don't want to lose the detail in the sky. However, I want to try to get this image into the database. What would folks recommend?

It will probably be extremely difficult getting this image on due to the overcast sky.

Do they only run on cloudy days?

On a day like that, use the trees and find angles looking down or in a tunnel of trees. Don't show the white sky.

You might have luck after all if this got on...

Yours was at least better exposed and there have been like 200 PRR E8a submissions the past couple of days.

Does anyone think it is worth appealing the photo?

In my opinion, it's a little bit dark. But, my opinion means little. If you like it the way it is and it would bother you to modify it just to get it in, then don't. If not, I'd brighten it up a bit and resubmit. It's a nice shot.

FWIW, I like the shot a lot. Somehow it works for me because it's cloudy. Just my personal tastes and since I'm not a screener, that's not worth a lot. I do think the actual train needs just a little brightening. The shot also needs some CW rotation, maybe in the .5-.75% vicinity.

Don't appeal yet, but keep working at it if you like the shot that much.

I tried it again, but it was rejected for being "Cloudy".

Is it worth the appeal with the changes I've made?

Its better than the E8 shot, which is utter crap and should be removed from the database IMHO. But its still cloudy and what Freericks said is spot on, on cloudy days avoid showing the sky.

Utter crap is about what I was going to say originally.

The OP actually did a good exposure job considering the conditions. A lot of time, a photographer would overexpose the scene to make it seem brighter and in the process blow out the sky. Who am I to say if it deserves to be on or not, but that E8 I posted really does not IMHO.

I think they have spoken. I would not appeal.

I tried a different shot from the same day:

http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...d=929341&key=0

...and then brightened it...

http://www.railpictures.net/viewreje...&key=312518610

...and I don't know what else can be done with it. Since I've seen so many cloudy shots on RP, I don't fully understand why these are being rejected.

The first one looks perfect to me. What does the histogram say? Great shot. I would have submitted it too and then had to pick my jaw off the ground when it was rejected.

Don't bother, once you get the exposure right you will (probably) get a Foreground Clutter rejection.

I tried to appeal the first B&W shot, and that was rejected as well.

I'm leaving these for my personal collection. There are times when I do feel that there are specific elements of my photos that are distracting, but it seems as though this is a matter of taste. I appreciate everyone's input.
