Default Canon 50D --> Nikon D90!

Nikon strikes back quickly, with built in video in a DSLR!

Given that many P&S cameras have built in video, this is a natural progression.

Too many bells and whistles is going to start taking its toll at some point. I wish someone would make a no-nonsense DSLR that is high quality but with no bells and whistles and manual only! That would probably cut the price in half.

Not that I am a great or in my case a good photographer but I totally agree with Jim here. You start adding all of these different mode and other do-hickies that you will probably never used. It just sounds "cool" to say, I have the pro 5000 with the plasma LCD screen, triple coated HDRI duplex sensor, yada yada, yada.

I would think if they built a decent camera with out all of the fancy bells and whistles for a good price that people would buy, it would be a great hit.

If im not mistaken several Nikons already have a GPS thing that geotags images.

I did like the statement about a DSLR with out all the bells and whistles, and all manual. I always thought it would be great to have something similar to the Pentax K1000 (or any other all manual SLR) but with a sensor in it instead. Just add a function to control white balance and I would be ready to shoot.

the essay is a bit on the technical side, but it looks at the creative issues also

I really hope that video in an SLR is a fad. This may be a mis-step on Nikon's part...

Is there anything else to add to a DSLR (and still maintain price points across the range of offerings)? That's what these guys are looking for.

Canon, which has been using the same DIGIC series of chips for P/S and DSLRs, is starting to blend the offerings - the 50D has face recognition.

Yup, it is feature creep. But frankly, don't all the current DSLRs pretty much offer all we need? Put another way, can a bit more high-ISO performance and nothing else sell enough cameras to be worth doing?
