Default Lens question

Hello,

Im thinking about buying a 55-200mm lens for my Nikon D40. The lens cost $250 and I was wondering.

Does the lens do it a good job?
Is it worth $250?
Should I buy it?

Any information will help!

Remember that especially in lens, you get what you pay for. $250 is a pretty inexpensive lens. The Sigma 55 to 200 mm I had for my Canon 300D -- it was given to me -- was a piece of crap. The Canon 18 to 55 kit lens looks like a L lens in comparision. I know you're young, so if this is what you can afford, you might want to go ahead and get it.

But do your homework first. You might do better getting a used lens.

From the images I've seen and reviews I've read, the 55-200 is a very capable performer. You might want to look around at B&H and Adorama for the VR version though. Its only another $40-50 more than the plain-jane version and gets you the valuable vibration reduction system.

Another thing to consider is buying used. You can get more lens for the same money.
KEH Camera usually has a good selection of Canon stuff, not sure about Nikon. B&H and Adorama have some used stuff too, but KEH usually has a lot more.

I am in no way affiliated with KEH, just a satisfied customer of both new and used equipment from them.
