That's the old/archaic/hopeless "I"; the new/modern/usable "II" is the expensive one.

Canon's prices on its tele upgrades the last year or two have been really something. Who are these pros that can buy this stuff, in a world where photography is being devalued??? I guess telephoto wildlife will never be shot with a phone and then instragrammed.

Actually, the funny thing is how much lighter the equally heavy 70-200 F/2.8 is Weight is a lot nicer when it's not dead weight. I ended up carrying another water bottle instead of the lens most of the time, or a small camera bag that didn't catch as much back sweat!
So, who wants to go up a mountain with me and shoot some trains?

I'd carry that equally heavy, much lighter () 70-200, my 100-400 and TWO water bottles up the mountain just to spite you.

Yeah I cant quite afford one right now after acquiring a D700 and the Nikon ''Holy Trinity'', hopefully in a few years I'll be able to add one to my kit..

Out of curiosity, what are the issues you experienced with the combination of the 70-200 and the 1.4x II? I managed to get a good deal on a 70-200 not long ago, but part of the deal was trading in my 75-300, so I've "lost" 100mm of zoom.

Well it arrived and the sun came out so I had to take it on a test run today, this one was taken across the rail yard on the other side of a bridge I have to say the IS works great, hand held with no mono-pod, I had 15mph wind gusts the temp was around 20 degrees, and I had a spring jacket on, so there was a little shivering going on. I read some cons on the push-pull zoom but I think I like it better. there was a few things I was testing out like the one switch for AF, you can switch from 1.8m to infinity to 6.5m to infinity, overall I liked it, the only draw back is, I feel a little uncomfortable it's kinda a thing that draws attention, and when your in the area I was in you have to keep your eyes peeled.
RP didn't like my crop on my first attempt but I see as I'm writing this they accepted the second
