Default "Twelve for the Year"

I know a similar thread has been started, but I thought I'd go ahead and bring this one up. Post your favorite/best shot you took from each month of 2011. Of course, I'll go first.

Well, because everyone else is asleep in the house, I guess I'll post mine out of sheer boredom.

I made the mistake of going up there with shorts on. Had poison oak from the upper thigh all the way down to my ankles. I eventually had to go into the doctor and get a steroid thing. Cleared it up, but for the time I had it, it was hell. I guess that's why no one else wants to go to that location.

I went there twice. The first time I didn't realize it was poison oak and paid the price with it all over both wrists (I don't wear shorts when hiking, no matter how hot it is...learned my lesson at a young age!). The second time when I got the shot above, I was able to completely avoid it with a LOT of cautious climbing.

By my math, I posted 323 shots to RP this past year---and that included a period from this time a year ago until April (four months) when I didn't post a single shot.

Most of my uploads were oldies from the '60s and '70s, plus some I hadn't bothered to submit from the last four or five years, but I did shoot some fresh material. Here are a five of my favorites from 2011:

I've certainly enjoyed the back and forth with many of you gents on this forum. I hadn't participated in quite a while, but it's certainly entertaining, and informative. There's quite a bit of wit and wisdom to be found here--and I'm richer for having had the experience (and, I hope to continue into the new year).

All the best to everyone in 2012 (and, I'll try to get my lazy butt out along the railroad and shoot a few more images this year, rather than rely on the old moldy images stashed away in my closet).

And remember---this is only a hobby, so never take train photography, or yourself, too seriously.

Ron

Reckon I can only do two favorites since I just started photographing trains last month, so here's my favorites from Nov and Dec.

Have to go with this one for November for the historic significance of it since it was my first shot ever on RP.net (and that took some doing):

PhotoID: 381591

And my personal favorite from December, even though a couple others generated more views:

This is a tossup. First was the first shot I got of the "new" Dash 8's on a road train, with one of my good friends, the youngest engineer in Missabe history (19) at the helm.

Next is easily the consist of the year, and fans from all over came to shoot them in the week they were together. We can always hope they will get put together again!

This a neat trip, we lent some of our equipment to the TC&W and I had to go down and supervise them, so of course I took some shots

Second, once the normal GP9RMs were shipped back to Canada, the last maroon SD38-2 found a home in yard service, along with the former DT&I unit, which after been a Missabe unit for a few years was shipped down to Wisconsin

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG
