Unpatched Conrail Units?
I was just wondering if there were any unpatched CR units left? I assume not.

No, there are no unpatched Conrail units left, atleast on the CSX and NS rosters. There are a few scattered in the backlots of dealers/rebuilders and the odd shortline or industrial operation.

Until last year, there were a couple unpatched conrail GP38's that never turned a wheel for CSX in the deadlines at Huntington, the last of them headed south to the scrappers last year with a few chessie painted GP40's and some other junk.

With the rate NS and CSX are painting it wont be long till there are none at all patched or unpatched....
CSX is down to around 25 (yes that low believe it or not)
NS still have over 100 but if you are on the NS Locos facebook group it seems like two or so are painted every week. You can thank the recession that we still have any left at all.

Nikos, is are your stats showing patched or unpatched?
It has been so long since the last big merger, that the class ones are getting very predictable.

Most of the ex-Cons that I've seen lately that are still blue look really bad, at least the Dash 8 and 9s. It's been a while since I saw a still blue GP38-2, but the paint on those seemed to be holding out.

The numbers quoted by Nikos are the number of Conrail painted units (all patched) left operating on each CSX and NS.
Conrail GP38's #7686, 7720 and 7725 all went to CSX though they did not operate long enough after the split to be renumbered. #7725 never operated at all on CSX and remained on NS property until late 2006 or early 2007 before finally being sent to CSX. This unit as well as #7686 and 7720 were to be used as core units for the Road Slug program during 2008-09 but the number of locomotives was cut back before the order was completed and these units never rebuilt. Both should still be buried in the deadlines at Waycross,GA along with a few GP40 cores which were not used.

Lol no such thing as a Conrail Dash 9. But yeah, GE's paint in the early 90s was s***, so the remaining Conrail C40-8W's and Santa Fe D8's look alot worse for wear than they should. On the other hand alot of the SD60M's and I's still look great, get em while you can folks.

One of the thing that makes the -8 conrail units look so bad is a lot of them were painted, and lettering was scotchlight stickers, not paint, and that stuff does not hold up very well. Look at the NS C40-8 and C40-9 which were delivered with them, they look terrible too

I'd still say it's the paint on the CR Dash 8s...look how bad (and rapidly) it faded.

Nikos, I was talking with the man who does the photography for NSLoco's. At NS's current repainting rate, they are not expected to have painted them all until 2013. Still time to go, but still, get your photo's while you can.. Ever so more the Strawberry Ridge trains on the NS Pittsburgh Line.

Nikos, I don't know where you are getting your numbers for units left in CR or CRQ paint on the active NS roster, But there is 177 Conrail painted units left on the active NS roster as of August 15th, 2010.
As for CSX, it is rumored under 40 remain.. Being said, 7304 ( C40-8W ) was the last to be repainted from the CR scheme.

29 at last count...CSX has suddenly started a repainting frenzy this year, and the CR units are disappearing fast.

Saw CSX #7490 along Sandpatch this past Saturday still wearing it's Conrail paint which, surprisingly, was still in pretty good condition. Only patch was to the road number on the cab.

I've been trying to catch a GE spartan cab still in blue on CSX for a while now. We were seeing some Conrail GPs here on CSX, but lately everything in and out of Cayce, SC is YN3 and YN2. There was/is a still blue SD60 variant on NS down here though.

There are still a few B40-8's still in CR paint, they tend to stick around Atlanta though: 5960, 5961, 5973
According to the Bullsheet, the only C40-8's still left in CR are 7489, 7490, 7493 and there is 11 CW40-8's left.
There is only 1 SD50 left: 2497, no SD60 variants, only 4 SD40-2. Basically CSX has almost eliminated the scourge that is Conrail painted junk on it's railroad.

They would have ended up abandoning a lot of trackage that is still in use today, thats one thing. Also the SD80MAC would have never existed.

NS is down to two CR painted C40-8 standards, 8303 and 8305, 8306 just went into the paint shop this week. I feel pretty fortunate to have shot all of them this year.

CSX C40-8W 7331 is one of those with the paint that is faded pretty bad, but a good place to catch it is on the Keystone Subdivision.
I've also photographed the standard cab CSX 7493 which has paint that is just as faded. It might look decent if they'd at least wash the darn thing.
There is an SD40-2 oddity out there that has the usual yellow CSX nose and then the rest of it still is in blue with Conrail Quality. I photographed it last spring and don't know if it got totally painted yet or not.

There are a few CSX D8W's in the Conrail paint still kicking... There was one running on the PITL a few days ago ( NS, but CSX owned CR ). 7493 was even in the helper pool at Connnellsville a while back.. As of December 1st, 2008's CSX roster, it counts 85 CR painted units on roster...
