Oooh decisions, decisions.........

Despite getting some great pictures in Switzerland, Spain and of my local railway, I think my choice would have to be this

I might be tempted to follow Loyd's lead if my mood changes in a couple of days though, a very hard choice to make.

I edited the shot and when I was done I turned off my
desk lamp and the image took on another character, at
least in my HO. The darker the room, the more the head
light seemed to glow showing the way.

Your mileage may vary.

Ahh, I gotcha, Mitch....tryin' to suck 'em in. I thought I was missing something...as if there were people who weren't seeing the full size picture when viewing the actual image. Beautiful image, by the way.

My favorite so far this year is also my latest, I wish now that I had parked my motorcycle on the other side of the street and made it more a part of the scene, it could have been more of a railfan's ride type of shot then. I have a "shots to get" list that is getting longer and longer but the smokey California skies and soaring fuel costs haven't helped any.

Great photo Arne. You might as well take Caltrain down to SJC, and Amtrak up to where-ever... "Going Green" as Amtrak says.

HAH!

It was between this one and the one of the Hartwell passing the old Southern depot in Lavonia, Ga. with the Rio Grande GP35 on lead. But this one had to beat it if for no other reason than a few things the EXIF data doesn't show. Like 35. Which was the temperature that day. Or 1.5, which was the number of hours I waited for ths train down there for it to get clearance to proceed.

When your favorite shot of 2008 comes a week into year, on your first trip of the year, it sets the bar pretty high. This shot was pure luck as I was just shooting the train going away for the hell of it. Luckily it was dark enough to see the firebox glow and even the silhouette of the fireman's shovel.

To those of you who haven't seen that fullscreen yet, it's really worth a click. The reporting marks, "ICE," can just be seen through the snow. One of my favorite shots.

Well, I have favorites that I didn't submit, but for my accepted shots, its probably this one. I felt I did a decent job with the equipment I had, and the colors came out near perfect, and I didn't blow the sky.

Thumbs up

I was driving with relatives in a part of New York we hadn't been in for years.
As it is wont to happen, we took a wrong turn. Then, in the fading light, this apparition zoomed out of the weeds and was gone as quickly as it came.

The next day, armed with my trusty 20D, I drove an hour and a half (praise the Lord for my present car's 38 MPG) and took a good look.

How to give an inert object motion? How to make it interesting? Well, having been inspired by all the great work here, I gave this idea a try.

The result is my first "Top Of Yesterday" and first "Top Of The Week"! And my highest view count.

So this one is my favorite of the year. (So far)

I found the Tygart River bridge in Elkins on my recent trip to WV to be rather photogenic itself, as well as being in a photogenic area, and with a steam engine to boot. I shot different compositions of the bridge at several different times of the day but I think this one came about as close to perfect as possible:

Image © John Higginson
PhotoID: 242959
Photograph © John Higginson

Here is a photo taken just a few minutes earlier while they were backing across the bridge, with more buildings framing the scene and a local guy in his pickup truck who pulled over frantically when he saw the unusual engine about to pass overhead.

http://john_higginson.rrpicturearchi...spx?id=1245806

I think I actually like the composition on the second image better but the steam and smoke in the one I posted to RP just brought the image to life better.

I also landed my personal favorite image so far from my favorite photo location in my home state of Alabama this year:

Image © John Higginson
PhotoID: 228859
Photograph © John Higginson

This is a great location to capture as the seasons change, as the foliage varies in color and density. This early spring image combines the best "almost-still-winter" lighting and view of the whole bridge, with just a hint of green buds on the trees.
