While the UP is closer of the 2, The UP seems to go out of its way to make life miserable for railfans. I personally have not had any problem with either, it seems my experiences with BNSF employees( tho limited) have been more pleasent. I miss the Mo-Pac around here myself.

How so? Really, I doubt they have any protocol to make railfans' lives miserable. They have larger issues about which to worry.

As I said, I personally have never had any problem with ANYONE from the UP, but know many people who have been flipped off, told in no uncertain terms that they had no right to be taking pictures where they were( on a public county road) and generally pestered by UP employees.
Keep in mind I have two good friends who work for the UP as signal maintainers and bear no grudge against any rail employees. I understand that they have a job to and as you said have more important things on their minds. Like getting home safely to their loved ones and in one piece

I like both and they both love me! I think by now most of the crews in my area have seen me enough to either be friendly or just ignore me. But I always get a wave if I give one. Somedays are better than others though for friendliness.

I like both railways. I'd say that my top two favorite class 1's would be BNSF and UP (sorry about the UP liking Ween! ).

If somebody waves at me I will wave back. If we don't wave back it is usually because we are busy working (cab red zone) or just plain beat. Keep in mind we are on call 24-7 including hollidays, and work at least 12 hrs a day everyday. As for crews flipping people off, I am sure you have coworkers that are jerks too.

*edited version*

Once our trains have as good an ontime record across the UP as they do on the BNSF, and once I can have an honest face-to-face discussion with a UP employee without being insulted I'll love them. I thank you Tag for being pleasant here though

Please folks, don't let this post throw us into a frenzy of arguments. Vote away and feel free to voice your opinion. Thanks for putting up with my venting today.

Cool

Living in the land of desert onions, it would be nice to see a splash of BNSF. As far as railroad/railfan ethics are concerned, UP has usually (I say that loosely) been understanding. If I had a dollar for everytime I've been kicked out of places and intimidated, I would be sipping a margarita in the Bahamas right now.

I like railroads. Class 1s, shortlines, regionals, tourist, industrial, museum.... did I leave anything out? If there are tracks nearby, I'm in a pretty good mood. If there's a train on it, even better. I have a favorite football team, a favorite TV show, even a favorite band. I don't have a favorite railroad.

Naah, You're not bad at all. I just was venting from an argument with a UP engineer, and the Coast Starlight's been *gulp* RELIABLE!! I may have to start changing my opinion on UP. I do like seeing members here who can't favor one over the other.
