Default Year By Year on the RP

I always thought 2007 was a banner year for railroad photography for me, so I was surprised when I did the search and found out that it's actually the third best year (in terms of number of actual uploads) for me since joining. In terms of the number of views, eight of my ten most popular shots in my portfolio are from 2007 though. It's my White Album.

The last two years have been very slow, but I didn't realize how slow 2009 was until now. Only 58 shots in two years for me. Here's the numbers by years for those who are really bored right now.

The few shots I have in the database were taken before RP came around and added later. A few shots were also added after the years they were taken in, but for the most part I uploaded the shots soon after I took them.

39 + 29 = 68, not 58

Forget popular. Which year had the most shots you are really proud of?

Yeh, that is pretty slow Joe. Three most viewed and not a train in sight. But they really fit into the category of RailPictures.

Here's a breakdown on my top 15 viewed shots by year:

2007 - 3
2008 - 4
2009 - 4 (3 PCA's)
2010 - 4 (2 SC's, 1 PCA)

I can't figure out my uploads per year, because I've had 40-50 shots pulled off because they lost their coolness after I figured out the "quality over quantity" idea.

I'm a statistics kind of guy so I'll play along, if only for my own curiosity. Although the numbers speak differently (due to my lack of selectivity and the site's lower standards in the old days), I personally consider 2008 to be my banner year for railroad photography, given subject matter, creativity, and personal accomplishment.

2009 and 2010 have certainly been a success in terms of Railpictures. 2010 showed a considerable gain in uploads and awards given. Most likely due to the amount of time I had free. Put almost all of my free time into train oriented trips. I think I traveled more than the rest of the family.

2008 - 39 photos
2009 - 280 photos - 2 PCA, 1 SC
2010 - 472 photos - 6 PCA, 1 SC, 1 POTW

I decided to sort mine by the year the shot was actually taken, rather than uploaded to RP.

Unfortunately, rail photography didn't really "click" with me till 2005, but in my opinion, I've improved every year since.

2005- 1 Photo. I used to have 2, but pulled my first RP acceptance since it wasn't up to par.

2006- 24 Photos.

2007- 56 Photos. Graduated college, got a job, and some free time to go shoot trains.

2008- 77 Photos. 2 POTW, 4 SC, 7 PCAs. Probably my coming out year, I really developed as a photographer and took advantage of some great shot opportunities.

2009- 68 Photos. 1 POTW, 1 SC, 3 PCAs.

2010- 38 Photos. 2 SC, 4 PCAs. Even though it looks like I've regressed since 2008, my average photos have dramatically improved. I looked through my 2010 photos the other night and really liked what I saw. Definitely my best year yet, but bring on 2011!

That's how I searched on the front page -- by my name in the drop down menu with year selected. That's why if I searched 2007 again, I'd have more shots from that year now than I did when I first posted this. As way of an update, here's 2011 --

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

John - Chase - why'd you stop at 2010? It's 2012.

As for me - year by year:

2006 was my first year but no photos with dogs.

2007, same.

2008, same.

2009 - My first success!

2010 - My second dog on RP:

2011 - The campaign continues and I reach two submissions this year, totaling 4 dogs total for the year, and 6 total to date from me.

Already have a dog on a cart lined up for 2012, though it was inadvertent. But this gives me "a leg up" on the next 12 months. Get it, lol! Maybe 2012 will be the year of the dog?

2011, a slow year, but actually probably average given my family/trackside balance, heavily skewed right now.

Most viewed (and most viewed slide scan from the past), an ordinary shot but ordinary from the past works on RP:

I didn't upload enough to justify showing three shots.

No PCA's or other awards, a couple top of 24, I dont know if that counts or how to track it.
