Thanks, everybody.

I need to get around to doing selections; so far I've only put in those that most closely fit my vague notion of what I want to do.

Sorry guys - these do not really fit into a category theme of "Plumes":

Sloppy thinking, Mitch. Maybe you should inquire about what I am trying to do, rather than infer badly.

Extremely loosely speaking, I see three kinds of plume shots.
- shots where the plume is the main compositional focus of interest
- standard shots of steam with truly awesome plumes, maybe just as awesome as the first, the difference being that in some sense the plume and train are equals, or rather not separable, in my mental thinking of the shot, whereas in the former the plume is more primary
- standard shots of steam with average plumes

A good example of the first is this wonderful plume shot, an all-time RP favorite of mine:

PhotoID: 312557
Photograph © Walter Scriptunas II - www.scriptunasimages.com

More good examples are these, where one can follow the path of the not-visible track by the plume:

My shot? Well, I am biased because I know the photographer's intent, which was to capture the very tall plume. Were I to take it again, I would want to do a vertical, like Walt's; at the time I also wanted the turntable. And I would like to have a spectacular plume, but at that location operating circumstances are such that it will never happen.

Call it a weaker member of the set, maybe the weakest.

Two of the three you mention in your less sarcastic post are excellent steam wedgies, but they are a dime a dozen in terms of the plumes. They do fit the theme, but so do many, many others. I guess in my albums I am for the most part looking for shots that fit narrow categories, rather than just outstanding shots. I am happy to have weaker shots as examples of what works , and necessary what works less well.

Yeah, that's a pretty serious take on what is, after all, only an RP album. Sometimes I can't turn it off.

Hi J,

I am a bit surprised that your album did not include these two:

I think both are very worthy. There are lots of other nice ones in the various suggestions, but these are the only two that I'd argue are real classics.

When I saw your original request, the criteria I used were shots in which:

-The plume was the focus
-The plume was critical in leading your eye to the train
-The plume was lit in a beautiful or unusual way
-The photo was dominated by the plume

The latter was the reason why I suggested Walter's Shay race shot. Half the frame is plume....there is no sky. But if you want to severely restrict the number of frames in the album, I can see forgoing that one.

I do agree with the idea of limiting the size of albums. Anything up to a few pages of photos is a pleasant thing to browse. An RP album with hundreds of shots, especially on a very focused theme, is probably not going to qualify as a "greatest hits" album.

Kevin, I have yet to go back through the threads and pick out shots like that and decide what is in and what is not. I first did the more-obvious-to-me shots that fit the very narrow plume composition shots. I need to do the ones that fit your nicely stated criteria, and separate them from the plume wedgies.

I've been a bit short on time but something about your snow plow shot, and my recollection of Walt's shot, made me want to set up the album and do it before I forgot about it.

And then I shamed myself, in Mitch's eye, by including something of my own that may not be up to the level of the greats.

Considering this shows up using "Plume" and "most favorited" - I still find it hard to believe that it does not meet your criteria for an album featuring "Plumes":

As for my past comment - I simply find myself looking through many albums and seeing many missing images that best represent the heading of the album and just assumed that those missing were simply undiscovered. Here, you have some of the best examples offered yet you seemed to have passed upon many.

Another thing I've noticed in many albums has been the inclusion of just about every single possible example - good or bad, which simply dilutes interest to just about anyone other then a reporter or editor seeking a very specific image.

Here are two more *optional* offerings that I found high up on the list via a search of "Plumes" and "most favorited". Course, not everyone included the term "Plume" in their image.

The thing is, setting up an album is kind of like setting up a website of railroad photography. The owner(s) get(s) to decide what they do and don't want in. The rest of us can sit around and question their judgement all we want (and frequently do), but at the end of the day, it's still their choice.

You could always start your own album entitled "Pictures that other people should have included in their albums but didn't."

First one, I hadn't seen it, I think, or maybe I did some time ago. That fits my hopes for this thread, to get suggestions. Not for someone to go all crabby on me. And I have yet, even now, many days later, to go through this thread and contemplate those that I have yet to consider. Gosh, one would think I was an RP screener!

Walt's is in. Sorry I am not able to act as quickly as some would like; I've been working very hard of late.

EDIT: Jon, exactly!

I had an album at one point since deleted that's theme was as vague as could be which looked much like many current albums on RP. I think it was titled something like "Specifically night shots but some day time pics and heritage units only except under certain circumstances and more". Janusz's theme seems to be opposite: "Lot's but not all great plume shots and a few that are not so great".

I've long contemplated a theme as you listed above: Was gonna call it "Rodney Dangerfield's No Respect Album", lol. Out of respect for him, I did not, lol.

I think that's the parallel that frustrates me! Great images that both viewer and screener share the same perceptions : "Eh - next!"

It is certainly a mix of "great" and "not so great", providing an overview of what is and isn't possible, or what has been achieved and has yet to be achieved. It reflects how I think about my own photography. It isn't just a list of topical pretties.

If there were a way to write a lengthy intro, or better yet, annotate each shot, that would work much better for me.

And it will never contain all the wedgie plumes, no matter how pretty. Just notable ones, where notable reflects my tastes, beyond just pretty.
