Default Gallery: Then and Now

I ran across an old slide and realized that it showed a spot in Pittsburgh (CP West Pitt, roughly) that I had seen a few recent shots of here. After considerable effort - it was not a cooperative slide, color-wise - it is on. The area has changed significantly, which is always interesting. Thanks to the Pittsburgh crowd for their coverage of my former (occasional) haunts.

So let's see any then vs. now same spot (roughly) sets of shots, yours, others, whatever.

Those are all good shots, Janusz. Yours looks like it could have been taken ten years before it was save for a few of the cars seen. Which of the shots underneathe is closest to the same vantage point for those of us who haven't been there before?

I've been wanting to go to Pittsburg for years ow. Seeing Bens shot of the NS OCS really makes me wish I had been there by now.

First of all, if you ever do go to PittsburgH, they will kick you out if you drop the H. Pittsburg is in Kansas, no one has ever heard of it, precisely because they unwisely choose to omit the proper H. Fools!


None of the vantage points are quite the same. John's 357 shot, the one with the white convention center on the left, shows a street below. That street is the street going straight back from the camera in my shot. Thus, I am guessing that the structure he is in, a parking deck I think, occupies the space of the Greyhound station in my shot. So, from his shot, to get to mine one needs to go down to street level and then back to the left. My shot is facing roughly north and his roughly NNW or something like that.

Brad's shot is taken from about the same vantage point, as is John's other shot, but there he is facing east, toward the other end of the same curve. Ben's shot, in the vicinity but no idea. I haven't been in that area since the construction and I don't recognize anything in his shot.

Pittsburghers, correct any and all of the above, it certainly isn't my territory.

Yeah, that was a time when there was nothing new at all in Pittsburgh for years and years, before its later resurgence.

Very neat thread! I have a lot to share, but I'll go through a couple. A fella by the name of Jim Butler (goes by James Butler on RP) used to submit a lot of older stuff to RP taken from St. Albans. As of the past two years, I'm pretty much the only RP.net contributor that submits images from St. Albans on a regular basis..

Actually, plenty of smart railfans have heard of Pittsburg, and known of the photo possibilities the correctly-spelled town provides.

I could re-photograph dozens of places of which I have shots on the DB but they are now all either completely devoid of railway equipment, masked by tress/undergrowth or inaccessible due to later installed high fencing.

These haven't changed too much. Many of the locations I used in the 80's are simply unusable today - and its not just a few branches in the way - frequently you can't even see the track.

This is one of my favourite then and nows. Not one of mine, but a
great example of what has happened to huge numbers of locations in the UK - once open landscapes have now become nothing more than 'tree lined canyons' as one of the national magazines put it recently.

Wow! Those years have not been kind to railfans there. It reminds me of lots of places here - steam had its own way of keeping foliage back, and these days such maintenance does not seem to be important to the RRs. It seems that sometimes the main form of control is railfans!

Foliage is not a big deal out here in California (chainlink fencing and/or subdivisions appearing and blocking the ROW are much more the issue).

But I have to say when I go back to my native NJ (Tri-State area) and beloved MD/VA/DC of my youth, I am constantly astounded at the areas that I used to shoot that are now completely grown over.

That one's pretty extreme, but not untypical. In some places I don't think there has been any clearance since the end of steam (1962 - 1968 in the UK depending on the area). This can bring further problems such as badgers and rabbits making their sets or burrows in cutting and embankment sides which weakens them. I guess its probably worse for you over the pond as its been longer since the end of steam.

Its getting worse though - the before picture in the example was taken some 19-20 years after the end of steam and there is virtually no undergrowth. Another 23 years has seen total obliteration of the view. I do know that due to environmental concerns the weedkillers used on the railways today are far less effective than that used in years gone by - I guess thats had a knock on effect beyond the edge of the permanent way.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG
