I shot with one of two prime lenses almost exclusively during 2010 (35mm and 50mm). Although my results may seem simplistic, I enjoyed the photographic challenges and results.

2010 was an interesting year for me. On the plus side, I took far more pictures this year than any previous year. I explored plenty of new areas and revisited some old ones to get better shots. I also picked up some L glass this summer. However, I still feel that this was more of a "quantity over quality" year for me. I took some good photos, but not much really stood out as great. Nonetheless, here's my top ten out of about 45 total RP photos from 2010.

WOW some great stuff on here. Well today I proudly present my top 10 of 2010. Some of these involved INCREDIBLE luck. Many times Jennifer was with me other times on my own...so now I present my top 10 most popular first based on views from bottom to top:

10 -
Image © Bob Pickering (BP)

Photograph © Bob Pickering (BP)

I drove to Washington DC ahead of the big blizzard of 2010, to get shots like this...a number of my top 10 shots for 2010 are from this trip.

In Washington DC during the big 2010 Blizzard of February I made sure I was there ahead of the storm to shoot trains like this.

February 2010 I made sure I was in Washington DC before the huge snow storm that struck in the early part of that month. Here is an Amtrak service plowing through the snow after the storm.

People love storm shots and so do I. I ventured out into a strong / severe thunderstorm last April to catch FEC 107 in the heavy rain. Lightning was hammering all around when I took this shooting from the open window of my Jeep

6 -

Amtrak ran a test train on the FEC and FEC's own Dave Shelly drew the lucky assignment of being the pilot engineer, seen waving from the cab in St. Augustine.

5 -

PhotoID: 322804
Photograph © Bob Pickering (BP)

Amtrak made an appearance on the FEC and when ever (if and when) Amtrak operates on the FEC regularly the town of Bunnell wants a part of the action. They came out in droves to show Amtrak they want a stop here.

Jennifer again found my way into another shot and that made this my 4th popular shot of 2010. Jennifer is a former model and I guess she has not lost that yet by all the clicks I got on this shot. No it was not staged, she picked her spot and happened to be in my view.

3 -

This is one of those shots that just involved major luck. Poised on the big Jax bridge myself and a number of RP.net and other photographers stood ready to catch the first ever arrival of the NS executive train. Well when it became apparent that the FEC transfer job may skunk the shot everyone ran up the bridge for a better view...I stood my ground and was the only one who nailed a shot of the entire train.

This is FEC train 107 on Eastern Sunday and Railpictures Contributor Jennifer McDaniel was caught by my lens waving at Dave Shelly on 107 in St. Augustine.

My most popular shot of 2010 - This shot involved a lot of luck. I purposely drove overnight the day before to be in the Washington DC area ahead of this historic storm. Jeep 4WD got me to this station in 20 minutes, usually only 5 minute ride from the hotel. Got stuck once, but made it to the station, slugged through 2 feet of snow to get to the platform to JUST make it.

I hope everyone enjoyed...lets see what happens in 2011....

I'm not sure whether the original poster means shots taken in 2010 or simply posted in 2010, but I'm going with shots I posted in 2010, which include a pair of shots taken in 2009. I had a great year in 2010 though, and the only way 2011 will top it is if the winter weather is a little more favorable.

Peter,
I must say, I really love that #2546 shot! What makes it even more interesting is my father was the engineer that day. Thanks for posting!

I loaded 39 shots taken in 2010 this year. That's a low number for me although higher than 2009 was. My favorites from 2010, counting down in true Casey Kasem fashion, are --

This summer, the Virginia Museum of Transportation held a birthday party for the N&W #611. Admission was free and they served cake!

Image ©
PhotoID:
Photograph ©

There's a really good and esteemed (pun intended) railroad photog in the shot. Next, sometimes it's the simple shots that stand out. This is just a yard switcher working in Cayce, SC with a dogwood blooming signaling the comoing of Spring. For whatever reason, shortly after, CSX came and chopped the tree down.

Image ©
PhotoID:
Photograph ©

Another pretty simple shot, but one I've wanted for a while. It's about 160 miles from where I live so getting there isn't easy. In spite of the CSX motors on the train, this is a shortline operation in North Carolina. The bridge has an ACWR decal on it.

Image ©
PhotoID:
Photograph ©

CSX not only chopped down the lone tree in their yard, they -- and the cCity of Cayce -- also closed three at grade crossings in town. The shooting at this crossing was never easy and the barricades actually improved the photo ops there.

Image ©
PhotoID:
Photograph ©

Excpt that this shot will no longer be possible, snow withstanding. I paused briefly while driving across the crossing to highlight a pretty substantial snow for Columbia, SC.

Image ©
PhotoID:

I finally shot a circus train in decent light this year. The sun angles did kinda leave me limited to this one location in Columbia.

Image ©
PhotoID:
Photograph ©

I'd been wanting to shoot the two L&C repainted switchers in decent light and finally did that this year too.

Image ©
PhotoID:
Photograph ©

I also shot the James Strates Carnival train for the first time this year in my favorite location.

Image ©

And then there was Richmond!
