Post Gallery: Best/Favorite Shots of 2011

Well Folks,

The time has come! As the year is coming to an end I'd figure I'd go ahead and start the annual Best/Favorites of 2011 gallery. What are your Top 5 best/favorite shots from this year?

I'll go ahead and start with mine:

I don't have enough shots to justify going with 5. I don't even have enough to justfiy two, but here they are anyway.

Experimenting with composition, also a favorite because I took it with a new digicam - not having to take a DSLR on a work trip is nice!

Here's my handful of favorites from the year (not quite 5):

A nose study. Taken at R&R's Spring TRAINing event at Steamtown:

And by far my favorite shot of all year is this one

Well, I only uploaded 1 shot this year, so this is my best AND worst of the year as far as RP goes!

Honestly 2011 wasn't a great year for me, although I did manage a few nice shots. You'll see a few of them once I get back to uploading on a regular basis in 2012.

Five? Only five, eh? Tough call....but we'll give it a go.

#5 Eureka on the Timber Bridge at Silverton. This is a gorgeous locomotive and I have been hoping for a nice, scenic shot of her actually running. This year, I got lucky:

Image © Kevin Madore
PhotoID: 373058

#4 One of many from the Willow Creek Productions Winter Charter at the D&S last February. 2 days of wall-to-wall sun and the Animas Canyon all to ourselves:

Image © Kevin Madore
PhotoID: 355437
Photograph © Kevin Madore

#3 Eureka again. No staged run-by here. Just pure, dumb luck that I was in the right place at the right time. While I appreciate the PCA and all of the looks people gave this shot, the icing on the cake came when I heard that the owner was "really touched" by the shot:

Image © Kevin Madore
PhotoID: 372810
Photograph © Kevin Madore

#2 The ultimate "Steamscape". Two White Pass steamers and a steam rotary in the wilderness of British Columbia. As the beer commercial says: "It just don't get no better than this!":

Image © Kevin Madore
PhotoID: 362263
Photograph © Kevin Madore

#1 This shot was initially rejected by RP as being STP...presumably similar to my PoTW. I actually like this shot better than the PoTW and it has been the background on my computers ever since.

Image © Kevin Madore
PhotoID: 363625
Photograph © Kevin Madore

If anyone has any interest, there is a short video of the 2011 White Pass Rotary Run on the WP&YR site. At the end, there are a couple of short interviews with RP Crewmember Dave Blaze and myself. http://www.wpyr.com/news/rotaryevent2011.html

The problem with the White Pass trip has been figuring out how I'm going to ever top it.

I'm in the same boat as Ken as far as uploads this year - only one. But it must have been pretty good (as far as my shots go, anyway), because it got in on the initial upload.

Five? Only 5?! That is definitely not enough.

Oh well, 5 will have to do. I probably shouldn't post mine after Kevin's shots because mine will look so boring, but here you go anyway:

My top five of 2011......based on views as that is a good gauge of what is popular in everyone's eyes...

So from 5 to 1

Maryann gets her shots of recently opened for business Tavares Eustis and Gulf railroads Orange Blossom Cannonball. Seems like when ever one of my lovely mermaids wind up in a shot the hits seem to go up.

It always seems that when any of the women who hang around me get into one of my pictures the hits go up, RP contributor Jennifer McDaniel is no exception seen waving at 101.

FEC 714 was repainted back into a scheme from the 1905's. The first day it was out on the rails I got a tip from an engineer friend that it was on Local 910. I made sure I was there on my lunch to get it.

My number 1 shot of 2011 was by pure luck as many top shots typically are. June 27th the rainy season that had been much delayed (Usually starts end of May here) came with a vengeance. Out into a thunderstorm producing 4 inch per hour rainfall I caught train 101 in Bunnell but lucky for me he had a 15 mph speed restriction due to trackwork. My jeep was flooded with 2 inches of water in the few minutes I had the window open. If the train was not slow I may not have got the shot. Big thank you also goes to those of you who helped me here get this on the database.

Have a cool Yule everyone....

There are some really nice photos in this gallery already! Reflecting back on this year, it's hard to really describe the words for what all has happened. It's been a simply amazing year, I've had the opportunity to participate in a lot of events, meet a lot of people from RP.net, and learn a lot about different regions and photography.

Number 5: Photographed in March of 2011, an RJ Corman/CSX coal train makes its way down through Loup Creek Falls to Thurmond from Pax.

Image © Chase Gunnoe
PhotoID: 358453
Photograph © Chase Gunnoe

Number 4: While a rather simple photo in composition and actually a grab photo, this was one of my favorite photos from the August 2011 trip to New Mexico along the incredibly busy BNSF Transcon. For someone who has spent 99% of their time in West Virginia, the opportunity to experience the Southwest was incredible and this personally to me, comes off as one photos that screams "Southwest" to me.

Image © Chase Gunnoe
PhotoID: 373500
Photograph © Chase Gunnoe

Number 3: Taken in December of 2011, just less than two weeks ago, this photo is something I had wanted to capture for a while, but never found the exact location to make it work. The codeline and classic C&O signals look sharp at night and with the full moon already set, the backdrop of stars added to the scene. Just one of those "at the right place at the right time" photos.

Image © Chase Gunnoe
PhotoID: 383615
Photograph © Chase Gunnoe

Number 2: Captured in June of 2011, the Thurmond Depot and C&O semaphore signal are silhouetted by the full moon, nestled deep in Appalachia. I really didn't like this photo at all, especially in color, but a bit of contrast adjustment in Photoshop and a conversion to B&W made this one of my favorites from this year.

Image © Chase Gunnoe
PhotoID: 366186
Photograph © Chase Gunnoe

Number 1: Taken 24 hours before my "Number Two" selection, my night photo from Sproul has to me by favorite from 2011, displaying the C&O mast signal at "Sproul Jct" and its red "beams" painting the tunnel face of Sproul Tunnel.

Image © Chase Gunnoe
PhotoID: 365969
Photograph © Chase Gunnoe

I hope everyone here at RP has a great 2012! I'm looking forward to it!

It's hard to pick just five, let alone to sort them, but here are mine.

Number 5 : From late August. One of my favorite locations in my area, and a nice human/animal element to boot.

Number 4 : From early February. A story of running like hell to get a shot and of good timing. A shot that displays both the size of the machine and winter action.

Number 3 : From late September. Great location, great light, great consist, a reflection, and a good friend to railfan with.

Image ©
PhotoID:

Number 2 : From early October. An aerial shot of a completely unaccessible location. A very eclectic train, and a MLW on the point.

Image ©
PhotoID:

Number 1 : From early December (got a lot of help from fellow forumites for this one). A photo which says "winter's a-coming" to me.

Lets make it Top Ten like normal. Also kinda early for this gallery.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

Here's my top 5 based on a made up point system for views, comments, favorites, and awards

5. A photo from an RP - rare area. The new prep plant and loadout South of Anjean, WV on the previously abandoned CSX Rupert Subdivision
Image © Loyd Lowry
PhotoID: 360550
Photograph © Loyd Lowry

4. It's a fake shoot, with a fake locomotive. 614 in her new Greenbrier Express Paint during a photoshoot at the C&O Historical Society. This one is near the top of my personal favorite list, and it was an honor to be in charge of setting up the scenes during the two 614 shoots this year.
Image © Loyd Lowry
PhotoID: 376816
Photograph © Loyd Lowry

3. My personal favorite, due to the amount of effort put into getting the shot. I would have settled for one train, after spending many hours atop this hard to reach cliff in the Gorge. Thankfully, the 20 - somethingth time was the charm.
Image © Loyd Lowry
PhotoID: 355621
Photograph © Loyd Lowry

2. Myself, and Appalachian Railfan barely made it out of Prince this night. The snow kept coming, and that road isn't great in dry weather. It was worth it though.
Image © Loyd Lowry
PhotoID: 354272

1. This one came from a perfect foggy early morning that resulted in several different, yet appealing photos for me. Taken just a mile from home.

My 2011 is definite lacking in creative, artistic shots and the usual assortment of highly publicized trips but luckily I was still able to see and photography a fair share of 'rare' or noteworthy events.

Here're my 5 favs, in no particular order:

I just like the early morning light...and the ACes. You gotta shoot through chain link fence to get this shot, so it's 'mashes only.

I was sent to Duluth, MN for training to be initial cadre for the USAF's purchase of 25 new Cirrus SR20 aircraft (now dubbed the T-53A), and I took every opportunity to get trackside after every day's flying. Seeing and hearing these classic standard cab EMDs made up for missing this opportunity when I lived so close in North Dakota.

I'm a sucker for the Denver and Rio Grande Western.

No crowds here for UP 844's run down the Joint Line. Too bad...the view was great!

Great to see everybody's favorites; it's nice to take a few minutes and reflect back on fond memories from the year-almost-gone-by.

I guess this would have to be "my favorite railroad photos of 2011 that are already on RP." Thanks to my girlfriend I spent a significant amount of time this year expanding my photographic horizons into the equine world and have a few shots of those subjects which definitely rank high on my favorites list. But, working within the constraints of this gallery...

#5: I fell in love with Coyote Basin the first time I visited the DPR two and a half years ago and was delighted to have the opportunity to re-shoot this angle with the correct camera.

#4: Does it get any better than the blue hour in winter? I also enjoy how the tunnel interior is lit by the approaching train, bringing out the detail in an area normally seen only as a black void.

#3: The story in the caption says it all.

#2: The horses were initially acting shy and wouldn't approach me standing at the side of the road, which basically ruined the shot I had hoped to do -- until the engineer made a brief brake application and the resulting squeal startled the horses into galloping. Clickclickclickclickclick and luck was in my favor.

#1: Hey, look, more winter blue hour! I have to admit, this was also luck -- I was banging out two-second exposures with the motor drive (yes, I know, not smart if I want to avoid internal vibrations) and managed to capture the headlights just perfectly on the short span. The ethereal trees fading off into the distance are the icing on the cake for this shot.

This year continues to be one the the wettest, with clouds nearly always present, so I decided to try and use them to advantage, I also caught some vintage equipment and got my first glint shot, not bad after all.
