Adobe LR and even Firefox - Graphics Processor Use

Why is it that, seemingly for no reason at all - with no changes made, when I open images in the develop module of Adobe Lightroom - I get a black screen. Yesterday - no problem. Next day - black screen. Advice offered via Google: Disable your GPU on your card. Yup - resolved - as it did the same for black squares in Mozilla Firefox pages. But why? It worked before. And why on Earth would I want to invest in a card with a GPU only to disable it for "better performance"?

*Reminder - it worked, then it didn't - so should not be an issue with the driver nor performance specs.
