Just scanned through this thread. Anytime I see someone using really odd settings such as 1/60th at f10, my immediate suspicion is that they were using some sort of automatic exposure mode. My experience is that newbies tend to lean on the camera to make exposure decisions....until they realize that with a couple of hours of practice, they can almost always do better.

Put your exposure selector on "M"
