Default Top 24 Overtaken

First time I have ever seen 2 Top 24 photos get taken over with a large head start. I think the two that were taken over have been on the front page for hours before being over taken.

That void where the nose mounted headlight belongs looks really fucking tacky on these NS AC units...

That Southern picture looks awful washed out on my monitor. I wonder if my monitor is set too bright?

I just noticed there's over a thousand links to that Southern picture. I wonder if that's a record?

The NS corp one has 1098 website Referrers since it has been uploaded today,
And another thing is Norfolk Southern Corp using this as a publicity thing?

They had a photo taken down on another site yesterday because it "wasnt an officical photo" or "taken without permission" or some bullshit like that.

Looks like a heavily processed high sun image on my side, too.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

Hi Travis,

It actually happened just last week with this one:

Image © Norfolk Southern Corp
PhotoID: 392356
Photograph © Norfolk Southern Corp

Another Casey Thomason Photo that was linked to high heaven. Last I knew it had like 13,000 hits. I forget now which image it displaced, but I remember being quite surprised...until I clicked on the detailed history hot-link.

Hey, on this site, ANYONE can make the Top of 24, given enough links. There are actually a few photographers who link every last shot they post. It's almost a sport to hack the clock from the moment their shots are accepted, and guess how long it takes them to post blind links on various other sites. I've linked a few of mine too, but generally, unless it's something really newsy, I hold off until the shot has been up for 24 hrs. I try to respect the friendly competition we all have to get our stuff on the home page.

I'm guessing you're referring to me among others. I haven't done that in well over a year (maybe more than that, hard to remember) and I don't think that most of the other "usual suspects" are doing it anymore either (at least I haven't noticed).

Hi Charles,

Nope, the folks I was referring to are still at it. They are relatively infrequent posters.

A while back, a well-known contributor had a great idea for a modification to TO24, that for one reason or another just fell flat here. Not sure why. His idea was that everyone could link to their heart's content, but that linked views would not be counted toward Top of 24. That way, site viewership would decide the daily popularity contest. You'd have to think enough of the thumbnail to click on it, vs. getting there from a completely blind link on Stumbleupon or some similar site.

Was it taken from public property?

These are odd examples to use to bitch and moan about "hotlinking." The Heritage units are going to knock all shots off the Top of 24 just because they are Heritage units. And since most of the people doing the linking are random people interested in the units themselves, I don't see what the problem is. I've passed a few links along on Facebook to those shots myself.

Now we have to compete with corporate advertising, but that's OK 'cause "Corporations are people, my friends"...

Who said anything about a competition? Is that why you're posting photos on RP?

All of this "link" talk is foreign to me. I just post photos, and if they make Top 24, or win an Oscar, it's all Greek to me.

NS is very careful about controlling the images of its heritage units, at least the shots taken on company property. Frankly, I don't blame them. Of course shots of these units taken on the line of road are fair game.

Any time you see one by Norfolk Southern Corp on Rail Pictures, it was taken by Casey Thomason. He's the company's official photographer (meaning, they pay him to do it, as an employee).

If that shot of the "Southern" unit got 100,000,000 hits, what difference would it make? It all pays the same....nothing.

All true enough, in general, but the sentences above, not so much. I do think that, even with the modest per-view rate paid for internet advertising (and I don't know that that rate is!), I suspect with 100 million views X that rate, the Chris's would be mighty, mighty pleased.

True! As you correctly noted, it's a matter of perspective. If I owned the site, 100 million views would be quite important!

As a guy who occasionally uploads train photos, though, it means nothing to me.

This coming from the guy who probably has the amount of views.

Kidding, Jon, I'm competing with myself. That's mainly why I post here.

Finally, we ask that you do not directly link to photos on this website for use on other websites. This is an unneccesary waste of our bandwidth, and costs us money.

Just saying

That was very poorly worded, and has been fixed in the upcoming "new" RP incarnation. It's referring to linking to the actual JPEG images, instead of providing a link to the photo page on the site.

Just to clarify, that means

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=392356

is ok, but

< img src=" whatever " >

is not. Right?
