Really, the pointless arrow is home in any environment, in any era.

OK, OK, its from the wiki, I can't say I am familiar with his work. But the quote seems to fit, which is scary.

Pointless arrow? Wow, I guess you DO learn something new every day. I've never heard that term before in my life.

I studied Lowell as part of my Master's program...

From Terminal Days at Beverly Farms

... Father and Mother moved to Beverly Farms
to be a two minute walk from the station,
half an hour by train from the Boston doctors.
They had no sea-view,
but blue sky tracks of the commuters' railroad shone
like a double-barrelled [sic] shotgun
through the scarlet late August sumac...

Yes... he knew how to Photoshop (with words)

That's awesome, I remember the old F40's, there's a few on the South Florida Tri-Rail line. Hope it makes it down to Florida.

Time to weigh in on the "quintessential" debate. First of all, Charles, how on earth could you leave Lou Gehrig off the list when naming Yankees? Or Yogi Berra?

As far as the debate over whether and F40 is the proper choice over and E unit or something else, I'd be inclined to argue in favor of the F40, and I grew up on the NEC with electric power (though, sadly, I was too young to pay attention to the last years of the GG1). The biggest argument against any of the older generation diesels if the aim is to celebrate Amtrak is that none of them were truly Amtrak engines. I don't mean that Amtrak didn't own them - only that they were inherited engines, cast off in a sense by the same railroads that also cast off passenger service. The SDP40F might be a candidate, except that it was really adopted as a temporary fix, had too many early problems, and then there's the fact that there's only one left in anything close to original condition and it belongs to someone else (can you say Portland and Western?). The F40 really represents Amtrak's first true modern diesel passenger power (HEP, no steam generators, etc.) - and as much as some of us might think in terms of electrics, the fact of the matter is only an internal combustion engine can go everywhere on the system. It gets my vote.

Or Whitey Ford, Don Larson, Bill Dickey (who Roy Campanella told me was the best catcher ever), Thurman Munson, Catfish Hunter, Mariano Rivera, etc... I think anyone can come up with quite a list.

But, I'm a Mets fan.

Janusz and John hit the nail on the head. You can't ride the fence on this one. You're either a Pittsburgh fan or your not.

Better? Questionable. At least it is coherent.

Does anyone in America even care about football anymore after last night's complete and utter destruction of all our hopes and dreams, yet again?

And at one time, Nets and Sets... but I honestly don't follow basketball anymore at all and pro team tennis didn't last very long.

TTCI has one, but you would never be able to get it.

I personally have had a problem with those trying to tell us to turn railroad photography into an "art form." It's fine for them to do so, I welcome it in fact, but what I do have a problem with is that the practitioners of the more "arty" shots, I have found, tend to look down their nose's at others who are shooting more "mundane" shots.
Railroad photography is what you make of it, but one way is not "better" than another, IMHO. Unless you have a pole right thought the nose of the engine! -SG

Why? Just because they suck doesn't do jack squat. Tickets are cheap & I can go fairly often. I'm going to a event they call " Pirates Fest " this friday, for season ticket holders ( I have my ways )
