Default The Popular Shot You Didn't Think Would Be

Okay... this is one of those bitch and moan posts... but how many of you have posted a shot you liked, but just submitted it when it was ready, because it never occured to you it had a chance to be a high view count shot... then it goes through the roof... but because of when you posted it, it doesn't compete?

(Yes, I know, this is pure self-indulgement... but dang... you post to be seen and it sucks when you misjudge.)

So I posted this one yesterday afternoon, never thinking it would have about 1K views in 24 hours.

And this is one of my dad's that I posted late in the day. It had like over 700 views its first 24 hours, if I recall correctly, but I'd posted it midday, because frankly... it was a shot of a San Dieagan... no biggie... huh?

But it's fun to have top pic of the day (and no, I'm not some competive bastard trying to bury other guys... I just think getting top of the day is a blast...). And I sort of hate not judging correctly. If I think a picture really has a shot at top of the day, I wait until 1:03 AM Eastern Time to post it. If I don't think it has a chance, I post it whenever. Sometimes, I'm wrong.

Okay... flame away.

Or, for those who have had the same experience, share your woes.

I had it happen to me on my second accepted photo to RP. I never expected anybody to like a going away shot so much. Then again I never though it would get accepted. The views hit 800 in less than a day, I must have done something right.

This is probably a tad off topic but, I have a couple others just here recently that I had high hopes for, but they have done horrid in views, could just be that I am still not very known on RP.

Still has not even hit 200 yet. But 7 people seemed to have liked it.

Heres one from Friday I expected to do pretty good. Only has 110 views.

Hey Watrain...

Must admit, I miss trashcat... and not off topic at all... totally hits my point... sometimes it's obvious (telemash of a NS Dash 9 in a familiar location doesn't do well... yeah, well), but other times... I swear, it's really hard to tell.

I guess the only safe thing to do is post everything at 1:03 am. But, that's work... and a pain in the butt.

Some "popularity" can be attributed to several things beside goodness;

1) wtf is that?
2) why does that have 12000 views? I better look too.
3) is that a chick?

I think Matt may have shifted the topic, to shots that just went over the top regardless of time of submission.

In which case I present the ultimate of the genre, now up to five thousand!

More seriously, while I have had no time of day disappointments, because I generally upload at 7am every time, I have had shots that I uploaded just because they are the shots I wanted to take, and didn't expect views, but have been subsequently surprised (no ToY/SC/PCA, of course, but still pleasing), such as this one:

Image © Janusz Mrozek
PhotoID: 204349

I have also had any number of shots that have gotten lots of views because the subject matter fits the RP viewership: scans of old slides, lots of power on parallel tracks, that sort of thing.

I think that's a great shot. The ratio is a bit square for my taste, but the clean painT and bright flowers combined with the tunnel give the viewer a lot to look at. If it wasn't a going away shot, the train would be bocking the tunnel, which is what finishes off the photo in my mind.

I clicked on that photo when I saw it, but the wires kiledl it for me. If you have the chance to shoot there again, point the camera more towards the ground to get rid of the wires. Also, cut off the top of the trees on the right half to give the shot more ground. Too much open sky is a huge dislike of mine.

Oops, I mis-understood the topic. I'm quite drunk, don't mind me
Also, who could forget the MOST POPULAR SWITCHSTAND SHOT OF ALL TIME (c) ?

I submitted this one thinking some people would like it, but little did I know it would become the top shot of yesterday and have several comments.

Don't disagree one iota. My dad's shot at the top of this thread is the perfect example. There was a lot of macadam at the depot back in those days. I think people clicked on it because they couldn't figure out what all that road was.

LOL - That's okay... I think hitting 12K is impressive no matter what... unless it's metric... not what is that in American?

(kidding... kidding...)

Thanks Mike! I have to say I was lucky to get a new GEVO in that shot, I was glad it was a southbound too. I really never thought about that photo until a couple of weeks after it got accepted. I thought for three days on whether or not to submit it glad I did.

Yeah, I will be trying that shot again. I drove 50 miles to get it, but now that you mention it the wires are a bit distracting. I especially want to do this again in the fall when the leaves change, and try it from a different angle.

Trashcat Is making a comeback soon, I just havent decided when. I did upload that shot at 1 am, and I guess thats why it was popular for one reason.

Telemash of a NS Dash-9 in a familiar location that only got 227 views since May. I was not surprised naturally.

I'll play -

Coming home from a trip through parts of BC, my money was on this photo:

I was quite surprised when this photo instead garnered all the attention, especially when, perhaps unknown to most, the engines seen here were actually parked. A bit of creative cropping!

Don't worry about that, we all think RMR photos are going to be way more popular than they eventually are
Besides, not many people get good shots of Mount Stephen.

I loaded this shot like Midnite not even thinking of the day cut off in just an hour or so..........

Image © J Douglas Moore
PhotoID: 249288
Photograph © J Douglas Moore

Had 86 hits that "day" and 585 the next. Had I waited about 1 hour, I would have had high hit count of the day cause the one that got it that day only had 570 something. I thoght it might do good, but I really messed up on my upload timing............ Noob mistake

You and me both!

I uploaded this one around 830 EST, expecting the typical 3-4 rejections before I get it fixed, and accepted. It's been humming right along this evening..

6000+ views and not one favorite. You know it must not be THAT special when river rails hasn't even made it one of his favorites.

Dinged for being a front coupled roster shot, accepted w/ a tighter crop, was number 1 or number 2 shot of the day.

I figured this might get dinged for PEQ - instead it made it on the front page.

I don't get it.

Default The Shot That Keps Getting Hits..... Somehow

This one of mine

Image ©
PhotoID:
Photograph ©

is inexplicably my 22nd most viewed shot. When I loaded it, I thought it might get a lot of hits just on the aforementioned "What the heck?" click. It registered between 300 and 400 hits the first day if I remember correctly. Since then, it's undoubetedly been linked by someone somewhere and has climbed to almost 3000 views.

Another shot I took the same day has 1,200 views.
