Didn't you mention once that you were going to get a camera for Christmas? Or maybe that was someone else...

I did, but, after my parents decided to buy this $1,800 iMac, they think of a DSLR as no more

So how much are they going to spend on a p&s for you? Have you considered getting a used 350D? If I had to see mine (and I'm not planning on it), I'd easily let it go for $300. Are they planning on going cheap and buying you a crappy p&s, or are they going to spend a few hundred to get a GOOD one? If it's the latter, why don't you just go with a used 350D?

Well, I would be buying a cheap P&S, and I just don't want to purchase CF cards yet . I'll just wait until I am old enough to get a job [In two years when I am 14] and save my own money.

Why don't you want to purchase CF cards yet? What does that have to do with anything?

Because CF cards are expensive, and, really, I am just not ready to purchase anything of the magnitude of a DSLR.

They've never been CHEAPER. For less than $20 you can get a 2 gig card.

How is he being offensive?

Don't beat him up over previous issues. He is back and I for one don't see any problems right now. Feel free to point me to a thread where his posts are problematic.

Point/shoot, Canon: I personally thing going wide is very important for photography of any sort, so I look for 28mm equivalent wide. In canon that gets you the 870IS (updated now?) - I have been considering getting the previous 800IS because it has a viewfinder. Not happy with my S70, slow reaction time and no IS.

I've gotta say it, this looks SO messed up....
Get an XT with either an 18-55 IS or a 17-85. Should be able to get that for under $500...

Nooooooooooooo! Or, lucky, if the 17-85!

Current KEH price for a used XT body is $380, 17-85 also for $380. The 18-55 IS is $140, and the 18-55 non-IS II is $90.

I've heard that the IS kit lens is way ahead of the non-IS one, I think it's worth the extra $50.

About the original topic of the photo with the fence I have a similar photo I shot for the closure of my favourite railway:

http://benbe.extra.hu/gallery/tolmac...oframe_hun.php

The fence is rusty, deformed, some weeds grow through it and the dark, cloudy weather together with all this supplies a very sad atmosphere. There are interesting DOF-considerations also.
