Default Actual Lens Flare! and my first accepted submission

Well, I'd like to start out with my first accepted submission, on the first try too, in probably at least 2 years, I guess I've come a long way from snapshots on my Canon Powershot

http://www.railpictures.net/viewphot...=392822&nseq=7

Now, this is an actual lens flare issue I'm having. A shot I have been trying to determine the proper exposure for, which I seem to have a good idea how I need to do it, the problems I'm running into are lens flare and flash power. The flash power is an easy fix, just need more power. I'm designing a flash array of 6 to 8 EOS hotshoes that would sync with my camera with a *really* long TTL cord, this is all stuff I can fab up at the shop fairly easily.

The idea, is a long-exposure of the gate drop, and first locomotive pass, but freezing the first locomotive halfway through the crossing? Sound easy? Apparently, it isn't. This was my result from last night.

Experimental 2-part then merge in Photoshop, proving to be a PITA. Gate drop wasn't too bad

but here's that god-awful lens flare

I wouldn't pass any of these, not a chance in Hell. Lol, however the concept of the shot is pretty good, at least I think it is. How can I eliminate lens flares like these, without too much clone tool in PS? I wished I could just get the whole damn thing in one shot, apply a noise reduction and exposure bump in Lightroom and be done with it.

I took into account the direction of the warning lights on the crossing and made sure they weren't straight into the lens, and none of them are, these flares are from the gates when they are dropped.

I would like to get this close to the crossing without awkward angles or lens flares from the crossing.

The other thing I noticed is the diesel isn't perfectly frozen, which I thought a flash would do even on a moving train.

My equipment used are as follows:

Canon 5D Classic, ISO 250
24-105/4L IS, IS off, manual focus engaged, F14 in the gate drop, F4 at the pass.
Shutter cord, 5$ metal Velbon VGB-3 tripod from a thirft store.

Flash is a Canon 540EZ at full power handheld

The last shot...was Richard Dreyfuss nearby when you shot it?

Just to mention the obvious, remove any lens filters you may have on.

yeah I'm running filterless, I have a 35-70 f3.5-4.5 I want to try since it has fewer glass elements, I know the 24-105/4 has a LOT of glass in it.

Found a solution! Going to take some time, and a little cash, but I figured out how to make this work, and I will post results soon.

Anything can be solved with a little cash.

Lightbulb Wrong, because no amount of money can buy even a scintilla of sanity.

No, that is not true.

Because no amount of shock treatment, anti-present medication or metal health therapy is going to help Daniel get over his anger at being shunned by most of the railfaning community nationwide.

BTW - Danny, why don't you pull up a chair at the big boy table in the metal health cafeteria.

I think this is the image that Jim is thinking about:

And the RR crossing scene:

I'm not, and I am getting pretty freaking old.

You must be from the last epoch like Charles.
