Question Worth an Appeal?

I grabbed this glint shot today of an NS SD40-2 at sunrise. The black paint acted as a great reflective surface. I thought the reverse image effect on the loco's numbers and lettering was pretty neat. The screener didn't agree. In hindsight I probably should have included more of the 2nd unit in the shot, but I was trying to focus on the lead engine. The "going away" angle was the only one that was going to work to capture the glint effect. Is this one worth pursuing via an appeal or should I just let it go?

Make sure in your appeal that you explain what it is you like about this shot. Explained appeals do much better than blank appeals, I think.

The appeal has been put in the hopper and I tried my best to explain what I was trying to capture and why that specific angle was the the only means of doing it. It is now in the hands of the RP.net gods.

I included your opinion JRDMC to maybe help sway the screeners. You're definately one of the best photo critics out here on RP.net and if the shot passes muster with you then I must not be tripping out if I think the shot is worthy of consideration.

I was surprised at the rejection. I've been trying hard lately to get "out of the box", or perhaps more accurately stated, "out of my box". Its sort of deflating to get a rejection on a shot that you think is special.

That, and the current cost for a cup of coffee, gets you a cup of coffee and no sway with the screeners! And for that matter, I didn't actually express an opinion.

I like the shot, and in fact for the reversing, if that is the right word, of the numbers/logo due to the light. It is a glint roster, and I think it should be in, but will understand if it gets kicked because it is deemed more of a going-away roster and less of a nice glint.

Here is my somewhat similar going-away glint, no so roster-ish as it is a train and a pan to boot:

Your appeal for photo id 634831 has been processed and has been rejected.
Admin Comments >> Why not include more of the second unit or the surrounding landscape? Granted the light is nice the overall composition is pretty routine.

I have a more "inclusive" shot where all 3 units are lit up a purplish/maroon color. I'll try that one.

Ok, now that is MUCH better than the original rejection to start this thread. No idea why they'd reject that. The color is really nice, you see more of the train and there's a subject of interest in the background.

At least the appeal screener was nice enough to provide some type of feedback. Most of the time they don't bother.

No need to get greedy, you've already got this one in:

Don't mean to pick on you, but you have 271 photos here with nearly 40 accepted just this month.

Let it go.

So the amount of photos you have on here should limit the amount you can appeal? That almost makes sense.

FWIW, I like both shots. I've always had a thing for glint.

Ummm... What part of "Finis" do you not understand? I let it go 3 days ago. I was shocked to see more activity on this thread today.

Yes.

If there's a limit on the amount you upload, then limit the amount you can appeal. Not my rules, just trying to be consistent with the site.

That makes sense.

Ummm, there's not a whole lot anyone can understand when you write one word sentences.

Finis with this thread.

I'm IMPRESSED that the screener actually took the time to write something.
Really impressed along the lines of, if this were my site I'd... can't comment on everything but nice to see that someone is attempting to treat it's members with respect rather then process like a bussiness.

I'm not a fan of the first shot - nice light, I like that you can read the logo, but it's a bit plain regarding the foreground and background (especially the trees barely but still popping up). Then again, Janusz likes it so in that respect, I might be wrong. I mean that jokingly in a good way.

I don't get the rejection on the second shot - very nice!
There, instead of just an engine, you have a story - end of the day, freight keeps moving. I like that you included the silos - gives it a sense of place.

What is Finis?

Edit: I used wikipedia.

the Latin word finis, meaning "the end" or "the goal".

I think I've gotten screener feedback on every one of my rejected appeals. I think it's a real nice touch that they take time to do that, at least on shots that have a prayer of getting into the DB.

The whole thing with the first shot is the neat reverse image effect. I will be the first to admit that the composition is that of a standard going away roster shot that in itself is not all that appealing. However, it was only that angle that produced the strange effect with the lettering.

I would appeal the 2nd rejection, but obviously my new "buddy" thinks I have already uploaded too many shots for January 2009 already. The trouble with my "buddy" is that he doesn't know that one of my friends was the engineer on this train and I was trying to get one of these neat glint shots into RP.net for his benefit, not mine.

By the way, "buddy", RP.net allows me to upload 10 shots per day. That means I could have uploaded 290 shots for January so far. Also, I am not aware of any restrictions on the number of appeals that can be made. Your statements are frankly ridiculous. I should be penalized for taking decent shots and getting a relatively large number of them accepted? I hit some magic number and, therefore, can't appeal anything? (I only made one appeal, so if it was "too much" then the alternative is zero.) I'm greedy for trying to get a unique glint shot accepted because another glint shot of another train at a different location on a different date made it in? Come on, give me a break!

For what it's worth, I always leave a note when screening (rejecting) appeals, except in two cases:

1. When there's nothing else to be added. If a shot is rejected for backlit, the photographer appeals and the sun is shining straight into the lens, for example, then no, I'm not going to add anything.

2. The photographer doesn't enter an appeal reason. If you can't take 10 seconds to tell me why you think we're wrong, I don't have 10 seconds to give you an answer either.

I get feedback just once in awhile. Maybe 1 out of 7?
