Default Photography on RR Property

Hello all,

I was wondering if there are any current railroad employee's who also do photography from on the RR property and how the company views this.

I am a conductor for BNSF Railway and do a lot of photography as a passion but have never tried it on property and would like to document some of the thign i see while being compiant with FRA EO 26 i believe it is. Also i am currently on furlough but make appearances for odds and ends.

Thanks!

Its a bit of grey area, if you do post shots here, post under a alias, and dont put important info like train ID, engine number and strip the exif data. There are a few who have shots on here that work for the rr, search SuperDave on the database for one example.

There are career rails here that do post, and some not very discreetly. I can think of one for sure BNSF. I won't expose any of them. Maybe they'll chime in.

Pretty much terrible advice right there. If it could get you in trouble, don't do it. Period. Dot.

I'd find the railroaders here that do post and ask them discreetly. BNSF has what seems to be a healthy relationship with railfans, but I'd either get advice from other BNSF railroaders or from someone within the company. The last group of people I'd ask advice from would be, well, frankly, us.

Seems to me that after the LA texting accident that doing anything that might distract you from your duties could lead to trouble. I would think that management and the FRA would be super critical, and if you asked a manager he would say not only no but hell no. Probably a firing offense. Things were a whole lot looser in the good ole days. That said, employees obviously are taking pix, because we see them here, and theoretically there are times when it can be done safely. Like so many things associated with railfanning, don't ask, just use heaps of good judgement and discretion (and hope you don't get caught by a hardnose).
