Default Am I hearing this right?

I'm on location here in Homestead, and there's some track work down the line in Braddock going on, seems like they've been working for months there. Anyways...trains are reporting the MOW limits and I hear on the scanner

"Q999, foreman *whoever*, requesting permission past your limits"

Did I hear that right? Q999? I assure you, this is no hoax. If I had an inline audio cable to hook up to the microphone port on this laptop, I'd record it for you. He hasn't showed up yet, so I don't know if its an actual intermodel or it's a new conductor/engineer using the wrong load symbol, using Q instead of a U for coal. We'll see in 'bout 5 minutes and I'll report back....

I heard right, he's def. saying "Q999" but it's def. not an intermodal. It's a loaded coal train. Why the Q instead of the U?

Hes probably saying U and you're just hearing 'Q' because you're listening for it. Like the time I thought T892 was a passenger special that nobody knew about being lead by a new ES44AC

Or maybe you getting a track warrant or trackcar number and confusing it with a symbol. I know you're pretty new to scanner there is a lot of room for error.

Hey John! Long time man! I've got a lot better at it. A LOT. It was a definitive Q999. When he cleared Braddock I quickly hooked my earphones, took the shot, then listened in with the earphones as I knew he would call Homestead after crossing the bridge. And to my amazement........Q999. Odd. I'm sure it may cause a stir when I upload and if it does get accepted.

I've never heard a U999 before. But, I am nearly certain it was not Q999. I often hear what I want to hear rather than what I am actually hearing.

Maybe I heard "U99 920" and it sounded like he put the train and loco number together as he was speaking? I don't know......just do not know.

The Bullsheet lists U999 as Bailey Mine to Colona (rail/barge transfer terminal in Monaca, PA), so more than likely that is what you saw.

Sounds like you just need more time to get use to the scanner chatter. No way he said U99 920 (unless it was NS coal drag extra somewhere in WV ). If you got that wrong, probably got the Q instead of U as well.

U999 would be correct then. Coming from the right direction, heading to the right direction.
