Compared to a 400/5.6 prime its a dog! thats what I am getting at. Its not as bad as using an older non-USM lens though, like if you ever used a 100-300L from back in the day.

GIZMO, how does your post respond to the sentence of mine that you quoted, other than serving as additional proof of your prowess in prose? Frankly, there was so much, and it wasn't clear what you had to say, that I only skimmed. But thanks for sharing your every thought on every dimension of photography.

Seriously, I have no idea what you are trying to express. You are (presumably) enthusiastic about photography products but it isn't clear what you are trying to achieve with your voluminous post.

Why hasn't that spammer been banned yet? C'mon, Admin, you're falling asleep at the wheel.

Another lens to consider is Sigma's fantastic 100-300 f.4. I had a Sigma 50-500 which really did cover a massive range but was very poor in low light and fairly soft above 400mm but on a sunny day it could give some nice results. Wanting better quality and performance I sold and got the sigma 100-300 f4 and the canon 400 f5.6 Both are great! I'd also recomend the sigma 18-50 f2.8 as a great value short lens.
Hope this helps,
Mark
