Default Opinions welcome on several rejects - bad cropping

I again had some recent rejects for "bad croppings" . Your opinion about these rejects would as usual be very highly appreciated. Many thanks in advance to all of you for your assistance.

Will any of these photos get in?
Will Daniel try an appeal?
Will we ever find out just what is wrong with these images?

Who is this mystery screener -

This and many other questions will be answered in the next
episode of SOAP!

What's this all about? Did I miss something recently?

Thanks Guys !!! From your answers I understand that nothing was really wrong with my pictures as far as the cropping is concerned .... This is worrying me a little bit as I will most certainly get more of these rejects in the future without knowing exactly what's wrong with the photos ....

I cropping is too square. I thought they're supposed to be 3:2 ratio.

Chris,

I don't think that the rejects are linked to the format or ratio. I have posted many pictures in the past having exactly the same dimensions and they have been accepted. For example, just look at the current POTW. It looks very square too.

I believe the first two have too much sky. You have the train too low in the frame (even though you are going for the smoke in the second, it puts the train uncofortably low in the frame). They also have too much room on the sides. In the first you have too much on the right. In the second too much on both sides. You can cut out that dead space.

I'm not sure why the third got hit for cropping, but the left side of the shot is badly blow out.

As an aside, to MG, huh?

Hi Daniel,

I'm glad you posted. I see your pictures all the time and I thought your name was Simon.

First, let me say that in general, I think your steam shots have some of the best color on RP. These are perhaps not the most colorful examples, but you post nice stuff.

I can't measure the cropping ratio on this monitor, but I don't think that's the issue. Yes, RP seems to prefer a 3:2 ratio, but narrower and squarer (is that word? ) pictures do get in. A panorama or a true square will probably get rejected.

Very honestly, I don't think the first or third crops are too far off.

The first one could probably lose a bit on the top and on the right. It could probably use a tad more room on the bottom and the left. Others may disagree, but I don't think it is terrible as is.

The second one definitely has the train too centered. I know you are trying to show off that nice plume, but several good photographers here have been banged lately for plume shots with the train either too centered or way off in a far corner. In the case of this one, a little off the left and off the top would probably be a good start. That sky isn't doing you any favors, so getting rid of some of it can only help the shot.

I'm really not sure what to do with the third one. Perhaps give a little more room on the Engineman's left and chop a little off the right. The Screener may think he's outside the left third. Also, that steam looks a tad bright, but that could easily be the laptop I'm currently on. It makes every shot look a bit overexposed.

Good luck!

Mitch's stuff: inside joke and I am on the outside? 2am brain shutdown? don't get it?

1st: looks unbalanced to the left, train is running off the frame, I'd crop on the right and make other adjustments, maybe crop the bottom as the bit or rock or dirt seems more distracting than depth-enhancing

2nd: also imbalanced - is that a strong wind pushing the plume off to the left? It's a tough one, I'd start with Kevin's suggestions, a bit off the right also, anything that reduces that bare ugly sky is good.

3rd: not sure about the crop. Looks overexposed - looks like you increased exposure to get driver/undercarriage (correct term?) detail but then the ground is unnaturally bright. Maybe crop a bit of the bottom and on the right to where you drop the large nut.

As for the photos and their respective rejections, back to back, to back - well, similar to the anticipation of catching the next episode of the hilarious TV series SOAP, I'm sitting here awaiting the outcome and explanations. They all look fine to me. Could they be 1% better, maybe - it's all in the eye of the beholder, which in this case, is a single screener's interpretation. But 3 back to back rejections on an issue most can not identify just seems off key.
